TR had asthma, but he changed his body completely. He was a force of nature. Go read about his time in the forests of Maine or his time in the Badlands. Or later in life on the River of Doubt.

If you're unaware of TR's lifelong obsession with creating and controlling his public image then you're not much of a "historian". He may have been a tough guy but there's every reason to take those stories with a grain of salt.
