Yep. One summer I was at NLU for some summer sessions and he / Sal let me train. If I remember correctly. It’s been a while.

If Ki Yoon was still around, I would have stuck it out. He was a traditional Korean teacher and not pumping out black belts to keep the checks coming. He taught all the classes and didn’t delegate to some recently leveled black belt.

He died of ALS about 10-11 years ago

Master Ki is a legend in my eyes in Baton Rouge. I only made it to blue belt, but it was special, because you knew you earned the belts you got with him. I still remember, during one of the test, my opponent landed what was one of the most perfect roundhouse kick to my abdomen that I am sure sounded like thunder to everyone watching us.

Shame ALS took him, just about every time I pass down Airline I look through the brush to see his logo painted on back of building. I think it just about all faded away now.

I took Tae Kwon Do when I was in middle school through early high school. Made it to red belt, but quit due to participating in sports taking precedence. I've met a lot of the traditional Korean Tae Kwon Do masters. Master Choi (Lake Charles), Master Ki Yoon (B.R.), Master Edward Lee (Thibodaux), Master Yang Moon (Metairie). Master Moon had 2 sons that were really good black belts. Did anyone know, trained with or met these men?

Tournaments were fun and were usually held at the universities. I got crushed by my opponent in my very first sparring match at Tulane's Fogleman Arena. Dick would rush up to me before I had a chance to respond. My best performance was at Houston Baptist Univ when I was 11 and placed 2nd in the sparring division against a very large field in my division (Green belt). Fun times. I would join again just to keep flexible in the event I don't have my conceal carry or in a place where guns aren't allowed and I have to protect myself and/or family.

Interesting how 50 years ago, a high school wrestler beat a former Green Beret black belt who owned Lake Charles Karate. Why do you think that MMA is mostly Ju Jitsu and not karate?

It's because 90% of fights end up with both people on the ground and Ju Jitsu would be the skill set to have when in this situation.

I took karate for a few years and made one promotion to yellow belt. My instructor was hard core, 4th degree black belt American who had studied in Japan for years with Okinawan Kempo. He used to rail against these cheap dojos that handed out belts like candy. You had to legit earn your belt in his class.

Sad tale though, right before the whole Susan Smith thing happened…his wife found he was cheating and was tending to their two kids one night while he was away…bathed them, put them to bed, then shot them, then shot herself. Didn’t get much media play like it would today but that always sticks with me. He had his son up there all the time, cute kid and just haunts me to this day.

I took karate when i was 5.
Practices were at 5pm. The same time that scooby doo was on tv.

My folks asked me if i wanted to continue. I told them that i wanted to watch scooby doo.

No regrets

I did not but by kid does it. He is a blue belt. He enjoys it and I think it helps with discipline. It's expensive as hell for two 30 minute sessions a week, and one on saturday morning that we make half the time.

Agreed. I got 2 boys in TKD now. Helps with coordination for sure. I did Choi Kwan Do as a kid. Was 2nd degree black belt. Wish I had those skills now

A friend of mines son hasn’t graduated high school and is already a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Honestly, the belt system is a fricking joke. I myself am a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and thus definitive proof it’s a joke.

i have my kids, 10 and 7, in twaekwando

one black belt instructor is a chubby dude that never lifted a weight in his life, probaly in his 40s

i have yet to see him teach any classes, he does the administrative stuff and yells aya when students aren’t loud enough

i wonder if i could beat his arse if i challenged him

his wife who also looks the same as he does and is second degree black belt and she too hardly ever teaches, i don’t even think she could touch her toes

Bob Allen and his son

I pretty much went to school with his son from elementary all the way through high school.

Bob Allen was really the only school in Monroe in the late 80's when I was growing up for martial arts. Even though I knew his son and actually saw him use his stuff against some bullies, I never got the urge to go try it. I guess it was because my uncle ran a boxing gym over in West Monroe and that's what I did instead.

my dad 82nd airborne and a neighbor british commando, taught me and commandos sons 10 to 13 bits and pieces of judo, ju jitsu and kung fu.
after college i took aikido at a mainly karate school. did all the karate training too. sparred vs teen karate guys. used aikido effectively in the little dramas we rehearsed for public to see. our guy used student sparring as a kind of advertising.

when my daughter was 5 to 8 she took judo.
she was also swimming.
and piano lessons from 5 to 15. after that garage band on bass guitar. drums.
was into horses after 2nd grade.
kept swimming.
her best gf took teen years of karate. got beat up by a guy in bar fight.
that ended pretense.
like tyson said.
