right behind the country club.

In May 2000 a chemical freight train derailed in Eunice, spilling numerous hazardous chemicals and causing about 15 tank cars to explode and burn; approximately 3,500 residents of the town were evacuated for as many as five days. Over 10,000 residents settled in May 2004 for $65 million with the Union Pacific Corporation in a class action suit, claiming that the corporation had failed to repair a defective section of track

Got into a wikipedia wormhole earlier and landed on Eunice, LA. I had no idea it was such a big derailment.

did everyone in Eunice get cut a $6,500 check? 70% of Eunice residents don’t make that in a year.

Lawyers get a substantial cut upfront. Likely got 4K or so.

Fricked up the fish population in the lake on side of the Country Club for years if I remember correctly.

I was a kid when it happened. My mom has a bunch of family in Eunice and she was worried about their safety. Everyone ended up being fine.

I remember the Livingston Parish derailment more so. Very similar circumstances with hazardous materials being carried into the air and threatening residents nearby. It was pretty bad.

Yepp; I was 9 at the time and it happened right down the road from our house.

I remember in my kid brain being scared that all the fish in that lake were radioactive now.

Johnny Cochran and his crew rolled into town. He played up how he was a home town LA guy and was there for his LA peeps. Sold the people on a class action, the citizens got enough to cover their hotel expenses and barely anything else. Cochran made tens of millions and disappeared in a puff of smoke as he hauled arse back to L.A.

"Suckers" was the last thing anyone heard him say.
