I got a cub cadet self propelled. No plastic parts, all metal.
I've been satisfied.

Toro Personal Pace. Mulch, bag and side discharge options. The Personal Pace self propel is impressive.

This one is similar at $200 to my craftsman 5.0 I bought in 1998 and is still runs fine.

Honda or Briggs and Straton engines are perfect for what the op is looking for. They will last forever if they are maintained properly.

It's been beat to death but get a Honda motor. I have a Troy Gilt with a Honda motor from Lowe's. It was fairly cheap and it starts on the first pull after 4 years of abuse.

get a Craftsman with a B&S engine. You will die before it does.
Just bought a 7.25 Craftsman B&S for ~$200. The equivalent mower at Lowes/Home Depot was minimum $280
B&S has a great reputation on engines from everyone I've talked to.

I got the next level 7.25 for ~$200 after random Sears coupons + points during their random "Black Friday on last Sunday" deal
