Who is the GOAT of all U.S generals?

Researching into American history of military leadership. I thought the OT would give some good answers. (I’m going to go out on a limb and say the OT has probably won’t say Grant)

Nimitz. He was an admiral technically but that’s my vote
Depends on what you’re asking because there’s different types of generals. Patton was one of the best field generals we’ve ever had but there’s a reason Eisenhower was given total strategic command of the European theater

Grant was a drunk so why would anyone?

Everybody will say Patton but the answer is Eisenhower.

I'm surprised Washington wasn't mentioned in the first 3 responses

Can't have this discussion without George Washington.
Not sure how you'd rank them, but George Washington, Winfield Scott, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, George Patton and Dwight Eisenhower all have to be considered.

Matt Ridgway is one of the greatest ever, and he flies a little under the historical radar
certainly MacArthur for the majority of his career

Heritage picks: Washington and Lee. I like Grant because he liked to kick people in the balls.
World War II picks: Patton was the best field commander. Eisenhower was the GOAT at keeping the alliance together. I always like Omar Bradley, too. I think "Dugout Doug" is overrated.

this one is simple. stonewall was the goat. in fact, it's been said that, if we don't accidentally shoot him, the south could've won.
he was so good at putting that ball where it needed to be with artillery that, it was unmatched by his replacement.
he would wipe out lines before the rifles even would have to line up and fire.

When having the upper hand on manpower and material, Patton.
When morale, manpower, and material are low, Washington.
Estimates were Washington's army had 2,400 soldiers before he crossed the Delaware on Christmas. Revolution was hanging by a thread.

"Dugout Doug" as you have derisively called him had as great or greater personal courage than almost anyone in the history of the US military. there is plenty negative to be said about MacArthur, as there is for any great man of history, but he did not lack courage.
