Who is the College Accreditation Authority

Guy at work is talking about enrolling in a college. Can't remember which one. He was worried that it's one of those "two years bachelor's degree" colleges. They're all "accredited" by some "authority" it seems. But what is the legit accreditation authority? Google returns more results than it should.
He said a few things that raised red flags such as, it's all online and it's $15k for the program. . . I didn't ask if it was $15k for all of the semester hours added up, or if they bill him $15k and he has access to all of the material. He also said it was a "work at your own pace" program. In totality, it sounded like it wasn't a conventional college but I suppose there is a chance it could be a legit college. I can find out the name of the college if that would help, I just figured there was an authority you could easily find if it's legit or not.

Ashworth College is the name that is sticking for some reason. I'll double check when he gets in.

We had a family friend years ago, don't recall which college she went to, but she had gotten a degree from a college that advertised that it was accredited, got a job that required a college degree and found out the college she went to lost its accreditation. I had looked around for awhile to figure out who's accredited and had no luck then either.

Legit accrediting agencies are recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Ed. They have a list of recognized agencies somewhere on their website. If the accrediting agency they're showing isn't recognized by the dept. of Ed, it ain't legit.

That's only for engineering and technology programs.
OP, you have to give more info. What is the school? Where is it located? What is the academic program?
There isn't just one singular accreditation board.

Regionally accredited: actual university
Nationally accredited: diploma mill

SACS (as Tiger Alum) posted does accreditation for the university overall.
Then other groups (like ABET as you pointed out) do accreditation for specific programs (like engineering).
That's what you want to look for in determining if your diploma is going to be worth something.

There are two things to consider, the school itself and the particular field the degree is in. For instance, LSU is accredited but it is possible for the college of engineering to lose its ABET accrediddation essentially rendering any LSU engineering degrees worthless from that point on until accreditation is again acquired.
I can tell you that, in many fields, a guy with an online degree as his primary degree, if it shows up as such, will be put at the bottom of the list when sorting through resumes. That may start to change as more and more online degrees become available but I doubt it’ll be anytime soon.

it's a for-profit school, i'd stay away.

I wouldn't touch the school myself, but it's not my money or my life. I'm just trying to keep him from making a mistake. He did make the comment about being concerned if the credits would transfer if he wanted to go somewhere else after his associates so I fired off an e-mail to a counselor from my college to see what she says.
