Never have understood the extension. It's only for the filing of the return. You still have to "best guess" and pay what you owe and roll the dice you didn't come up short.

We filed an extension and received word it was granted last Wednesday. All documents are in to our CPA and will file later this week.

When you file the extension, how long do you get before you have to file the actual return? Never filed an extension before.

October 15th.
And you need to be above 90% of what the IRS says you ultimately owe, paid by tomorrow.

I'm filing today. I had everything ready to go a few weeks ago, but writing that check is difficult.

<--Not OT rich.

I assume anything under 90% accrues interest for the 6 month period from April to Oct?

Yes, but you can also avoid the penalty by paying what you paid last year.

90% of estimated liability this year or,
100% of what you paid this year

Looked at all purchases and expenses for the year that were work related and itemized everything out. Saved me 4k on federal and getting me maybe 500 bucks back. State somehow is 10x that amount

While I don't know one way or the other, I would have to imagine that returns filed under an extension tend to get a harder look and have a higher incidence of audit.

Sent my two checks in early last week.

Registered U.S. Mail, receipt requested, still haven’t received a response from either.

Not necessarily. If you filed an extension because you just didn't get your shite together but it's still a simple return, the chance of audit doesnt really increase. The reason the chance of audit would be higher is because the returns tend to be more complex, which increases the chance of audit. More of a correlation doesn't equal causation thing.

I donated a shite ton of building materials and safety equipment last year.

Screw it. Helluva lot more than I claimed.

It was just wierd that the federal was so much lower than the state.

Guess I left federal money on the table.
