They are for detecting cars at lights mostly since they no longer use the loops under the road. Be thankful they are there so lights dont turn green for invisible cars at lights

Yeah the old loop under pavement type detectors can be a PIA when riding a motorcycle.

If it’s at an intersection and it doesn’t have solar panels it’s being used to control stop lights.

If it has a solar panel and is facing one direction it’s a license plate reader.

If it has a solar panel, mounted high, and the camera is in a dome mount it’s a traffic cam.

These aren't the amber alert cameras that take pix of your license plate when someone gets kidnapped?

Just a guess but I think they are Flock LPR (License Plate Reader) cameras.

That's it. When the cops put out a BOLO for a certain vehicle, this sends them an alert when that vehicle license plate gets scanned.

Just read an article about this Norfolk
quote:

The police have logged Schmidt’s movements without a warrant nearly every day since February 2023. Yet nobody suspects him of a crime. He is not even a person of interest. The police follow him anyway, using a network of 172 cameras all over the city — each equipped with advanced license plate readers from third-party vendor Flock Safety.?Schmidt is not special. No algorithm has flagged him as a future threat. It’s just that Norfolk treats everyone like this. If you drive a vehicle in the city, you are being watched.?Some people love the surveillance. It makes them feel safe. And they believe as long as they follow the law, they will not have to worry about the dragnet because the police only care about criminals.

quote:

Schmidt understands this. So, he and Portsmouth resident Crystal Arrington fought back with a federal lawsuit on Oct. 21. Our public interest law firm, the Institute for Justice, represents them.?Case law is on their side. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers Virginia, struck down a Baltimore spy plane program in 2021. The aerial cameras were not nearly as intrusive as the ground cameras in Norfolk. At best, they could see blurred dots or blobs.?Yet the court decided that capturing “the whole of individuals’ movements” is a search, which requires a warrant. Tracking people over time is what separates the Baltimore and Norfolk systems from simpler law enforcement tools like red-light cameras. The only time a red-light camera goes off is when someone commits an infraction.

I promise you it's doing a lot more than that.

Every plate is scanned and dumped into a database with timestamps and locations.

not shite. Criminals swap plates, remove them completely or use a paper temp tag. So these cameras are tracking devices for law abiding citizens which is bullshite.

Its a very effective system. Alerts can be placed on any plate and LEO gets a ping when said plate passes by. Makes working an investigation easy. Every city, town village will get 1+ reader. Shiner, Texas a 1 stoplight town got 4.
Pete Bootyman bought $10Billion worth of them and he didnt steal a penny of that fed money. You will be monitored comrades.

They put these in along Hwy 14 and 27 between LC and Cameron when the LNG facility was under construction to monitor traffic.
