Who here remembers the “Snake Farm” on Airline near LePlace?

The thread of old photos got me thinking about it.
I remember stopping a few times there as a kid. They had a bunch of snakes, turtles, and gators, and the final room was a large chimp that flung shite at everyone.
I’m thinking it closed down in the early 80’s

I hear the newest version of the "Snake Farm" is now located in Washington D.C.
Yep, you guessed it...in Congress and in the White House!

My dad and I were going to a Saints game back in the 70’s and stopped by there. That chimp slung his shite at us also. My dad snatched me and the shite hit a black girl standing beside me in the face

I used to go to "LePlace" all the time in the 70's , never heard of it....

I believe the story went that after a cobra had bit a worker, they closed the place down. We used to stop from return trips to NO.

There was one out in the East, on Hwy 90 as well, if I recall correctly. I think my Dad used to call it the Reptile Museum or Snake Museum. I have a few fleeting memories of going there in my early childhood. I can still smell the place.

Never went in, but the signage on the building and billboards on hwy 61 caught your attention.

My Mom would never let my Dad stop, in spite of our begging.
Finally, on one of our times of staying with my Mamaw who lived in Norco, she took us. You could tell how disgusted she was, but she hung in there. Thanks Mamaw, you can RIP now knowing you don’t have to go back.

I sold a lot of snakes, ells, and lizards to them. The place stunk like you won't believe. The old signs along Airline hwy with the girl in a "Jane" outfit ended up happening in real life. The original owners daughter walked around in the huge pit handling snakes. They believe she stepped on a Cotton Mouth that bit the shite out of her on her ankle, she died and the owner sold the place to the Kilbert family ran it for 15-20 years, that also (I think) are owners of the alligator farm in Ponchatoula.

Yep
Owners name was McClung
And, I think he was bitten by something venemous back in the day.
They had to call in Bill Haast from Miami with a serum...
