Having a kid made me change a lot of my reckless ways.

It was a blessing

Ummm no, I did it right the first time, despite temptations. I get credit for that. You succumbed and fricked up. You are punished for that. If you want a case lesson on how to live life, I am a better example than the reformed tweaker. Going through a corrective phase just means you are catching up to those of us who made good decisions.

Similar story for me. I was hell on wheels in high school and college. Dabbled in just about everything and spiraled down in college.

My senior year I cold turkey quit everything I was doing, got in shape, and somehow survived OCS - ended up doing 6 years in the USMC. Now I’m married with kids, about to graduate from grad school, and have a full time job locked down.

Don’t ever give up on your friends.

I drank too much after Iraq and eventually ended up upside down in a ditch and then ICU for a few days and a second DWI. Lost my certificates from the FAA and of course my career. Got sober and spent a few years working a manual labor job before I decided to try to get back into flying. Did three years of monitoring with the FAA and eventually got my license back. Been back in the cockpit for a couple years now flying as a contractor for the military overseas.

To the people struggling, don’t give up. Just keep grinding. I drank quite a bit (still do but controlled now, got arrested a few times when I was young. Eventually got tired of the bull shite, went back to school. Made a 3.7 in engineering and now I have a very challenging but rewarding job as a Naval Officer. I’m the old man since I’m in my 30s but wouldn’t change it. When you get to where you’re going make sure you share your mistakes. Really helps younger people. I want to believe I changed at least one since the 7 years I got right.

I've had well off friends lose everything to coke. That 50-100 a day really adds up fast.
Sad. Physically you can just stop. Mentally you never want to. Stop now. It's never going to be as good as the first time. Never. Try something else.

Although not my thread, I certainly appreciate the honesty coming out of you guys. Fortunately I’ve never personally been in that boat but several people close to me have. Some are still f-ups with zero direction in their 30s.

Keep up the good fight OP et al.

Mid late thirties are when some people become disenchanted with the way things have been going and try to redefine themselves. Losing direction isn't just a thing of youth, or necessarily a bad thing.

Damn, that’s a different but equally as bad story.

Though I must say I’m not sure where the true “frick up” happened

Sounds like:

pursued graduate school without planning for it.

Pssh. Y'all talking about drug problems and yet Not a single one of y'all ever sucked on some dicks for drugs.

You would have sucked those dicks anyway, the drugs was just bonus.

I think that guy just framed it wrong or in the wrong context. I know the type he’s talking about and agree (as I think most would) that they are horrible, but doesn’t seem like he was directing that at the OP. Kinda bad timing or whatever.

i havent straightened my life out. I have vices: food, booze, laziness, and i wish i could get with women, but never have. I also daydream but never do anything about it.

Well this is just bullshite. You don't need to get arrested and end up upside down in a ditch "to get where you're going." They sure as hell don't help you.

I sort of did that. Dropped out of high school, got married and had two babies. Divorced after 13 years. Then my life turned around. Got GED, went to college a night while working during the day, finally to Charity School of Nursing. Worked 32 years as a nurse. Not a bad ending. Oh, and I would not consider the babies a f’up.

Adding: never any drugs or booze and no criminal record.
