We had one for 15 years when the kids were small. Do not listen to the naysayers who preach the raised station wagon (SUV). Those sliding doors and ability to step in make securing little ones so much easier.
I guess it all breaks down to what appeals to you. Do you want to look cool or do you want a functional vehicle that meets all of your family needs?

The only difference between a minivan and the majority of SUV's on the market these days is a sliding door. So don't think you are winning at life if you have an SUV instead of a minivan.

We can handle the possibility of being seen in a mini the 1 or 2 times a week we drove it.

Minivans are the most comfortable and practical passenger vehicles on the planet for hauling people
If I had more than two kids I wouldn't hesitate buying one. It would be that or a station wagon. Whichever one got better gas mileage.
