I do not have a job today. First work day in 20+ years to be without one.

I do not believe their offers were genuine. No way they’d pay me that much to be a construction manager when I literally have zero experience and nothing in my 25 year career to even suggest I’d be decent at it. The ME position maybe, but still…the offers had zero lead in, no interviews (and I just spoke with the engineering manager the day before) or even mention of what I’d do. It was just to check a box.

They offered you a job as a construction manager and you have no experience? Well, that explains why supervision sucks so bad., and why everything on these jobs get screwed up. That explains lots of things.

So you think the offers were a bluff? What do you think would’ve happened if you had accepted one of them?

Exactly why he wasn't "laid off."

He should have been laid off. This is why the doors are falling off planes during flight. You can't just transfer people to different jobs if they have no experience doing those jobs. This is frightening. Thank God he quit. I have to deal with this nightmare everyday. The way industry and HR is being run will destroy America.

You fired someone for just being high?

I guess depending what you are high on. In my early 20's I was working in a warehouse driving forklifts and all that good stuff. Me and a buddy at work would smoke everyday. I've never been more in the zone at a job in my life. High on opiates, nodding off on the job I would probably have to fire someone or at least eat their arse for breakfast

I'm sorry. Losing a job is never fun. I wish you well on the search for a new one and hopefully it needs up being a move up.

Getting laid off from my last job turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It led me to my current job, which I would not have been looking for otherwise, and it's the best job I've ever had!

This. I've been at my current job for 13 years, and I found it by chance right after getting let go from my previous job. I wouldn't leave this place unless they made me. It's like family. Much less stress, better hours, better pay, better enjoyment in what I do. Sometimes a fallback is a blessing in disguise. That's why I tell anyone that I know that's dealing with hardship to hang in there. You can't see the path that our Creator set before us until you're already on your journey. It's never as bad as it seems. Even a thornbush creates fruit.

No, because they offered me 2 lateral positions…both offer letters on the table (I declined)…I did not get severance.

So you're unemployed by choice? OK, now I take back everything I said before. If you didn't have anything else lined up before declining to keep working for the same company, then you're just an idiot with a hurt ego.

It sounds like they wanted to keep you, so they were placing you somewhere until something else came up.

It happens a lot with new organizational structuring.

The org chart would likely look a lot different this time next year.
