Visited the National Museum of Nuclear Science recently. Greatly exceeded my expectations and only $12 for admission. Highly recommend it to anyone who grew up in the atomic age.

We weren't still doing actual bomb drills but we did watch the videos in school explaining what to expect during and after a nuclear attack.

They were still blowing the air raid sirens every so often to clear the bird nests out of them - two or three times a year if memory serves me.

Kids should grow up worrying about being incinerated at any minute, builds character.

I'm genuinely impressed you know how to operate a computer/smart device at your age

We used to have to get under our desks at school during the drills. Like that was going to help.

We invented the goddamn things, why shouldn't I know how to use one?

We had an evacuation plan. Parents drove to school and took as many kids in their cars as they could. We drove around a few blocks and came back to school. I wondered where we would go in the event of a real attack. Seemed no one knew.

Cold War kids were hard to kill.

Under their desks in an air raid drill.

They also warned people to keep their yards free of debris and to paint their houses bc a painted house is less likely to catch fire. Many people ignore this advice nowadays.

I'm not that f'n old.

I concede, computers have changed. They've gotten simple enough to operate that even REALLY dumb people can use one. That certainly wasn't always the case.

Albuquerque.

Had much more "stuff" on display than I expected.

I figured it was going to be mostly documents on display under glass and placards. Instead there were actual launch vehicles, weapons systems, aircraft, some of the original analog lab instruments from Oak Ridge, etc. It was outstanding.

Best documents were birth certificates of kids born in the infirmary at Los Alamos. Over 100 children were born in PO Box 1663, Santa Fe NM, the only place on Earth that Los Alamos actually existed.

I lived in Albuquerque for three years in the mid fifties. Dad was stationed at Sandia (now Kirtland Air Force Base). Moved to San Diego in 57 and dad retired there after 27 yrs. in the Navy. He was pretty close lipped about what went on at Sandia...although he did say that the alien thing was not a weather balloon.
I went to elementary school in San Diego and we did a lot of duck and cover.

It always seemed crazy to get under the desk to help protect against a nuclear warhead. Illusion of safety and all that.

We did duck and cover drills. During those few weeks of the Cuban Missle crisis, it seemed like we did them daily. All the desks had to be aligned parallel to the windows. In reality, there was way more chance of dying when a bunch of 1st and 2nd graders struggled to turn their desks over on their sides without being crushed than there was of being killed by a nuclear blast.
