I didn't believe you but I looked it up and you're right. He attended Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship to study philosophy, became a helicopter pilot and Ranger in the Army, etc. etc.
As a civilian, to supplement his income while trying to get his music career started he flew helicopters to oil rigs for PHI out of Lafayette. He got Johnny Cash's attention by landing his chopper in Cash's front yard and his music career finally took off.
I'll agree he's lived a badass life.
