But where is the problem? You're trying to make a profit with your movie. It is incredibly risky to cast someone who represents less than 5% of the potential domestic moviegoers.

Yeah, but it comes at the expense of the actual fanbase who actually want to see the movie and get pissed when the franchise they love is shat upon by whitewashing it. And think about it, how often does this "washing" really work on today's audiences? Most of the major culprits I can think of went onto bomb.

The biggest example in the past 5 years I can think of is Ghostbusters where they "chickwashed" it, and of course it bombed. As far as I'm aware, it's never really been tried to make an major American movie with Asian leads, save for if it has to do with Kung Fu with the aforementioned actors and Harold and Kumar.

I actually saw the trailer and thought it was pretty cool that Matt Damon was going to be in a movie about chinese lore.

Chinese lore?

This would be like transferring the Battle of Thermopylae to Pre-Columbus America and calling it Native American lore. Asian Dragons are so different from European Dragons that it's simply comical to call it "Chinese Lore".

Yes, it's a movie using the backdrop of the great wall for chinese dragons. It's chinese mythology and thus fricking lore.

But go ahead and tell me more about my own culture

ETA: first line when you wiki "chinese dragons"... "Chinese dragons are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology and Chinese folklore"

Yet, dragons aren't lore

It's not your culture any more, we used Matt Damon to take it. Did you not read the article?

Umm, no. Chinese dragons are associated with the water and the wind, are wish granters, and are said to bring rains for harvests. They are seen as saviors and basically worshipped by the ancient Chinese.

European dragons on the other hand are associated with fire and destruction, and are greedy hoarders of treasure. They were seen as arms of Satan and to be despised. The clear European inspired-dragon shown in that trailer is about as far from Chinese lore as you can get.

According to Matt Damon, Chinese dragons do whatever the frick white people tell them to.

I'm pretty sure it's a blackmailing scheme, like we'll sell them their culture back for a few trillion dollars.....

European dragons

We got only a very small teaser glimpse of a dragon. Sorry if I assumed, in a movie about the chinese ppl and great wall, that it was going to eventually be a chinese dragon.

I really don't care to argue over semantics, but chinese dragons = chinese lore.

I don't have any issue with big budget movies with actors of any race. I have an issue with movies that are supposedly about some minority where the lead is some out of place white man or woman there to save them from themselves.

well most of the time they're saving the "noble savage" from the terrible white intruders

that's one of those liberal catch-22s. they love the noble savage myth so they can display the moral corruption of western values

quote:

Are you saying that "Hollywood" thinks that white people won't buy movie tickets if the lead isn't white, but other races will buy tickets when the lead actor is a different race than they are?

i think star power appeals to all races

Chinese dragons are basically benevolent gods to the Chinese. The European dragons were mindless, greedy monsters. They have more in common with Hindu Gods than they do with European dragons.

Can we just talk about how stupid it is for them to build a wall to keep out something that can fly?

Sorry, but whitewashing with Asian characters is definitely a thing in Hollywood.

Because there have been sooooooo many Asians in Hollywood history. It's like some of fricking forget that the U.S. is and historically was a majority white country.

The movement and anti-white sentiment are more important than facts.

But they almost always rewrite a story with an Asian main character and make him white. It's really without fail. All it does is piss off people who enjoy the actual story behind it. Blacks are given it all the time, why shouldn't Asians at least be given a chance? They've never had a big budget film starring an Asian who isn't named Jackie Chan or Jet Li.

As your reward, every other race that you have helped will turn on you and spend all of their time trying to demean and remove you.......

You keep saying this but where are these egregious examples of removing what should have been an Asian lead?

ETA: Particularly in the last 20 or so years. I genuinely cannot recall a major movie where I thought, "damn, this movie really needed an Asian guy instead of a white guy."
