It's too bad Trump can't sit down with Albert Speer and share his vision for the entire city of Berlin. Er, I mean Washington DC. :-(

The twin Eagles atop this proposed Arch of Baal, er, Arch of Trump is a nice touch too. It reminds us that the Roman Empire has never really ended.

quote:

CBS News' Ed O'Keefe asked the president who the arch is for, and Mr. Trump pointed at himself: "Me."

If you are gonna copy something, copy the Trevi fountain or some of the the fountains in Piazza Navona. That's my vote anyway.

Do you have video of this, because the only thing I've found I don't hear him say "me".

What does that have to do with this?

I think it's important for the public to get confirmation that taxpayers aren't funding this.

I don't have any strong feelings about it either way.

It will add to the architectural beauty of DC and it celebrates the 250th anniversary of our founding.

I was trying to think how I'd react if a Democrat administration was building it - I'd probably be just as indifferent.

Look forward to seeing it one day.

I concur. A grand water fountain like Trevi symbolizes the life, harmony and vitality of a people.

An arch? It conveys hubris, celebrating military procession and war victories.

More ominous -- some say it's a "portal" or "Stargate"; others say it is commemorated as the 'The Arch of Baal'.

With it being Ed O'Keefe, considering me skeptical until I see a video of him saying it.

Trump said the ballroom project was "fully financed" and some of the leftover money would be used to fund the arch.
Is this where the "private funding" claims are coming from or are there other statements? Because it doesn’t say that.

There are two assertions here: (1) It’s fully financed. (2) Some of the leftover ballroom renovation money will be used to build it. If I renovate my dining room and then want to install a pool, using $2k leftover from the dining room reno along with the entirety of my kids’ college fund, when my wife asks “how are we paying for it?” and I say it’s “fully financed” and that the leftover money from the dining room reno will be used, my statement would be 100% true yet extremely misleading.

I admit I’m a layperson in the fields of monument design and ballroom renovation, but it seems to me that if there was really enough leftover from financing a ballroom renovation to build a giant fricking arch, it must have been the most wildly successful fundraiser of all time and the administration would be leading with very clear language that it was 100% donor funded.

Now, there may indeed be a statement out there explicitly saying that, in which case none of what I said applies, but I’m just working from what was posted in this thread.

I didn't read all that but I think it's important to note that the ballroom was funded privately as well. That is not disputed by anyone.

Not sure if that changes your post.

It doesn't. The statement says it's "fully funded" and that some of the leftover money from the ballroom reno will be used. The assertion "it's fully funded by the leftover ballroom renovation" is not in that statement and is being inferred. It states only that those funds will be used.
