While United suffers, Delta paid this family $11k not to fly this weekend

Over the past week, Delta Air Lines has encountered epic travel delays after unprecedented storms forced the cancellation of thousands of flights.

I travel a lot for my career, and when I’m headed somewhere, I want to get there. As a travel editor, I’ve run stories about people who make a profession out of getting bumped by the airlines. And yet, I’ve always quietly scoffed at travelers who would give up a seat on a flight in exchange for a voucher. Not my thing.

This weekend, my family and I profited from Delta's travel woes — big time. We made $11k. Here's how we did it and why I'm not such a snob about getting bumped any more.

Delta screws up, but at least in my case, they've always worked hard to make things right.

I wouldn't be surprised if people with no status are treated differently though. I think they are currently the best of the legacy carriers.

It's nice to see everyone in America come together for something, even if it's to take a wet shite on United Airlines.

I hate airports, but I would hang out at one all weekend for $11k.

But we can't complain. Do the math — my family and I made about $11,000 from Delta this weekend. And it didn’t cost us anything besides our time (and a missed trip).

so the guy carried his family to and from the airport 3 days in a row and cancelled his family vacation.

yankees are such nerds.

Delta bumped me last year "due to weather". I missed a half a day of vacation but they got me to Atlanta and gave us a free hotel room and fed us. My child was happy as can be because the hotel had an indoor pool and I saved a couple hundred bucks in the process. I always fly Delta when I can.

You and me both.

Ive had two air travel issues in my life.

Southwest lost my bags going to Oklahoma City (and brought them to my hotel later)

Delta had me delayed getting into Atlanta from Buffalo and I missed my connection. $150 voucher + $50 dinner voucher to wait a couple hours more.

My husband approached the gate agent and offered to give up our seats for $1,500 apiece. She countered: $1,350 each.

exception, not the norm

again, exception, not the norm

Every overbooked flight that I have been on...heck all they are offering is like a $50 bass pro gift card or some crap like that.

Many times, I have offered to give up my seat for 2 round trip business class tickets anywhere in the world....crickets.

My father in law has had some nice paydays volunteering to give up his seat on an overbooked flight. He lives in Alabama and flies weekly for business. Many times he has a short connecting flight from ATL to Alabama. On more than a few occasions he has volunteered to give up his ATL to Bama ticket to the tune of $1000+. He then rents a car and makes the 2 hour drive from the airport back home.

I've never seen that. I fly 70,000 miles every year.

Usually they start at $300-$400, and they typically get volunteers between $500 and up.

This is actually common, although I've never seen it get higher than $1100 before someone bites (at least for Domestic). I fly Delta mostly.

You can tell when you encounter a former Continental crew. Those are pretty rare now.

I've gotten Delta Airline vouchers valued at $600 once, and $800 another time. Neither required an overnight stay. Both were just a couple of hour delay.

As much as i wish i was this fluid with travel plans, my wife thinks i am slightly on the autism spectrum. I can't deviate from a plan. It sucks. I envy people like this woman and her family. good for them.

The flight I was one was offered two first class round trip tickets to anywhere in the continental US to give up a seat. The guy next to me jumped on the offer. That was about 16 years ago (?) Can't remember the airlines.

I fly Delta 75+ times a year (not a ton obviously but enough to get Gold Medallion status and some years Platinum). They screw up but they always treat me very, very well.

I occasionally have to fly American or United without status and it is a noticeable difference.

The status may make a small difference but I think Delta is definitely the best option atm.
