Ive had two air travel issues in my life.

Lucky.

I've had 6 missed connection, 4 ended up as overnights, in the last 5 months alone.

4 Carrier Issues 2 weather. Just a bad stretch. (Actually mostly Delta)

That's why I kind of sympathize here. The flight the next day is in no way certain either. You do whatever you can to stay on the flight you book, or they should pay you a lot of money.

Edit: I have two Pilot Brother-In-Laws, and for comparison sake, I've had more missed connections/canceled flights than they have in 5 months.

Delta is great but Atlanta fricking sucks. I hate the people in that airport, the smell of that place, that cramped plane train, etc.

I am glad Southwest goes most places I travel in the US. Priority boarding gets me front 2 rows in the aisle, free drinks, and I feel like there are never delays or cancellations. They also board and de-board incredibly fast, which is something I can appreciate.

SW is great for domestic flights 2 hours or less I think. And in my experience they have been considerably more reliable. If you have had status on an airline like United where you get upgrades fairly consistently though, it's pretty great. I was Gold for a couple years before it got really diluted and would get upgraded on IAH-DEN flights maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of the time. There was nothing better than that flying home after a week of work

United customer service is atrocious though. Continental was fantastic

My husband approached the gate agent and offered to give up our seats for $1,500 apiece. She countered: $1,350 each.

exception, not the norm

Indeed, when we got to the airport, the airline started offering money to volunteers…$300…$600…$900…$1,000...$1,300. Bingo!
again, exception, not the norm

If you read the story, they were looking for sixty volunteers - another flight had been cancelled due to weather. So yes, it was the exception and not the norm.

Another big difference is that the writer told them she was willing to give up the seats and didn't have to be dragged off by LEO's.
