All except New Orleans.
Mostly because the costs of living are extremely high for a small city and the white collar job market is barely competitive with Baton Rouge or Lafayette, much less Chicago.
Even if I wanted to move to NOLA, there isn't a career path that takes me in that direction. It's way below its own weight class in white collar jobs.
Birmingham is doable but wouldn't be my preference. I would personally prefer Nashville or Charlotte over Chicago, but it's hard to argue with the opportunities for me in the Windy City.

Nola has terrible cycling and Chicago is cold as shite coupled with terrible cycling. Bham, Nashville, and Charlotte are a toss up for me. All three have access to good roads to ride and mountains to climb. It would just depend on the job for me

I have lived in Nashville and was raised in Birmingham so those two would be my top options.
You will be fine in the suburbs of both of those cities.

Chicago is incredible from May-Sept if you have money. But, if you can't deal with the rest of the year, I would say Nashville.

Yes:
Nashville
New Orleans
Charlotte
Birmingham
No:
Chicago
It's mid-April and Chicago is still in the 30s and experiencing snow. You'd have to pay me a shitload of money to live there.

Nashville or Charlotte because I think both places are nice cities with lots to do. Chicago would be a no go because of the winter. I really don't have anything good to say about either Birmingham or New Orleans

But New Orleans would have to be significantly better than the rest for me to live there. I'd live in Peoria Iowa for the right price.
It would take a good bump for me to move to Birmingham as well, and at least a cost of living adjustment for Chicago.
I've never been to Charlotte, but I'm sure it's decent enough.
I always hear good things about Nashville, but also that it's booming and getting really expensive.

Nashville - nope, too many country singers and shitty music
New Orleans - nope, too many thugs and I value my life
Charlotte - maybe
Birmingham - nope, too many gumps and anything not on the cost in Alabama sucks
Chicago - Frick no, too cold

Not having chain restaurants is what makes Nola awesome though.

My wife is from Birmingham. It has a lot of the same problems that NOLA has - (high crime, bad schools, similar demographics, sub par white collar job market compared to the others in the list).
If you arguing the terrain is nicer than I'll give you that. And I'm talking about the city itself. There are some nice suburbs.

No to all. I grew up in Bham, have been to NOLA dozens of times and Nashville 4 or 5 times.
From that list I would pick Charlotte. I know nothing about Chicago.
I've lived in Atl, Houston, Orange beach and 5 cities in south Florida. I would take all of them over the cities listed.

Nashville -Yes
New Orleans - No
Charlotte - Yes
Birmingham - Maybe
Chicago - Yes
Birmingham and especially New Orleans are lower tier cities with limited opportunities and crappy public services.

I would live in any of them except Birmingham.
The order would be:
Nashville
Chicago
New Orleans
Charlotte (though to be fair I've never been and hear nothing but good things, so if I'd been before it might be higher up)

so much of this is individual taste,
of this list:
in the right neighborhood and job:
1) NOLA
2) Chicago
3/4) Birmingham or Charlotte
5) Nashville, yes I know it's booming, etc but it's a little too churchy for my tastes...

The winters in Chicago would be a problem for me.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but New Orleans. The other cities are too cold.

Nashville and Charlotte. I have visited them all, and these two stand out for me for quality of live overall.

New Orleans, everything else is just Cleveland.
Either you haven't spent much time in the other cities, or you haven't spent much time in Cleveland.
