re: Which historical figure is the most misunderstood today?

His credentials and accomplishments during one of the most formative eras of American history are impressive.
I honestly think George HW Bush doesn't get enough credit. He certainly wasn't perfect, especially on the domestic front but his resume:
President
Vice President
Director of the CIA
Chief of US Liaison Office to China
Ambassador to UN
Chair of RNC
House of Representatives
WW2 Pilot
The dude love and served his country from beginning to end. Again, not everyone here need to agree with all of his decision or policies to see that.
I'd also argue that only recently have people started to recognize the importance and the credit his leadership deserves for the lack of a world war / major conflict following the Soviet collapse.

Arguably the second most tyrannical POTUS ever, only because Lincoln actually led the country to a civil war.
By getting elected? 7 of the 11 states seceded before Lincoln took office. Prior to Beauregard firing on Fort Sumpter, there was no declaration of war, just an unwillingness to give up US owned property. Much like there would be if California seceded (unilateral secession has been deemed illegal, it would require consent from the federal government to happen) as they talked about recently, the US would seek compensation for US owned (federal) lands.

Trump has been brain dead for some time. Does that count?

Marie Antoinette, the subject of a vile anti-Catholic, nativist, and anti-monarchist propaganda campaign.
Hernán Cortes, hated by moderns for helping the natives of central Mexico overthrow an absolutely despicable empire that practised, among other things, human sacrifice. FFS, he was actually a controversial figure back in Spain for favouring the natives too much over the Spaniards.

Lincoln is hailed as a hero but he's really a tyrant.

Glad to hear it. Maybe this time next year I'll be able to get that expensive vodka cheap.

Misunderstood, I would say William T Sherman. He's renowned as a hero from the Civil War, but he was a slave owner and indifferent towards slavery. He fought for the Union because of his staunch belief in keeping the Union together.
None of this discredits anything he did as a general, but nobody today understands why he fought for the Union.

All I need to know about Lee is that he was a traitor POS
IF you faced the same circumstances, would you leave your home state to fight against your family and friends? Lee was loyal to a fault to his home state. He was a brilliant mind. Eisenhower had his picture in his office because he admired him.
Read some real history, not the Revisionist crap you have been brainwashed with.
And Robert E. Lee's Tigers are the reason LSU got the Tiger as its Mascot. Do you want all of these retards to have their way and have LSU change its mascot like Ole Miss had to?

To be honest, most world conquerers. We think of Alexander, Genghis Khan, and Julius Caesar as iconic and great men, when really there's not much difference between them and men like Adolf Hitler. Hardcore History did a video on how Hitler will be remembered 2000 years from now, and he thinks they'll have a similar disposition to Hitler as we do to Alexander the Great. For frick's sake, Genghis has a restaurant chain named after him.
No, Hitler will never be revered as a world conqueror. First, he wasn't a great military commander like those others. More importantly, there was that Holocaust thing. That will never be excused or forgotten. Those other men were certainly capable of butchering a city and whatnot, but their savagery had a purpose. Plus, Hitler's crimes are documented forever in photographs etc.
