I think both Baton Rouge and New Orleans are going to have an incredibly difficult time hanging on to what's left of talented workers in this state.
Many other states will likely rebound and reopen faster and bigger and make it a compelling reason to relocate.

New Orleans will be fine. Most of their economy is based on Federal relief dollars. Without a hurricane recently, Covid came at the right time.

The BR metro has about 750k people.
The economy consists of a lot more than Lsu. Heavy industry (the plants and companies that support them) is really much more important than 7-8 football games.

You’re looking at this the wrong way though. College towns may only be missing those 7 opportunities, but they also have far less opportunities to recoup the losses. Generally speaking, people are still far more likely to visit and spend money in New Orleans than they are in Baton Rouge.
Baton Rouge is bigger than a usual college town so it’s not quite the same. A better example would be something like College Station and Austin. Austin may be missing a much higher number of economic opportunities, but the College Station economy will be absolutely devastated if there is no Texas A&M football this year.
This problem grows even more if they end up shutting down classes and kicking students off campus again.

Individuals. The people that are flocking to beaches by the 1000s every weekend right now. It’s not nearly the same thing as conventions and major sporting events, but it’s something.
My very small social media circle has frequently and consistently seen out of towners within driving distance making day trips or weekend trips to New Orleans throughout all of this. I’ve seen exactly 0 making trips to Baton Rouge.
New Orleans metro area is also roughly double the size of Baton Rouge, so far more people outside the city limits going into the city to do things. I think we also all know far more people from Baton Rouge that go to New Orleans for leisure and entertainment than vice versa.
This also assumes competent leadership from both cities that allow activities to open up that attract these types of visitors when it’s appropriate. That is certainly not a given.

From a different perspective, I look at these national retailers who are closing locations.
They're obviously culling off the bottom performing locations or ones they don't think will ever bounce back.
I don't hear about as many New Orleans retailers calling it quits yet, but definitely see that happening in Baton Rouge right now.
There does not seem to be as good of a risk/reward in Baton Rouge compared to New Orleans if you're looking 3-5 years down the road.
