A few of the criteria in the OP are tricky here. Cost of living is manageable except for housing, which is catching up to other Mountain West/PNW cities.
Work opportunities is a total non starter here, at least those looking for high-income, high-skilled jobs. Have a job already lined up at Micron or come from out of state with a work from home gig.
Traffic is the other issue. Unless you live and work in Boise City prepare for a long commute even though the distances are short. The amount of time it takes to get from Caldwell or Nampa or even Eagle/Meridian into town during rush hour is bonkers.
Otherwise a nice place to live. Small and quiet compared to where we came from (Phoenix). The people are super kind. We don’t deal with as many homeless people and the crime we did in Phoenix. You don’t smell weed everywhere. We all have guns. The outdoor activities are nice, but limited in Boise. The best stuff is in the mountains 1-2 hours away.

I looked at Burlington, VT; Ithaca, NY; Madison, Wisconsin; Boulder, CO; and Boise, Idaho.
They all had a lot of upside to them.
The weather during the winter months would nix all of those for me.

My wife loves to have a 3 year option plan at all times so contemplate these same questions for brain exercises.
The issue that always gets me, is after discussing hypotheticals. Where would I move that most people wouldn't think I was a retard from moving from Monterey?

That’s tough bud… Google which countries have the lowest average IQ

Moved to Milton from ITP a couple of years ago and freaking love it, great area. Not cheap though, for the record.
Our plan, to answer OP’s question, is to buy a 2nd home inland Maine somewhere down the road when we retire and split time between their and Georgia.

Idaho or Montana. If I had the money.
They are both super cheap depending on where in the state you want to live. I bought a house in Boise several years ago and it’s a super cheap place to live. Sun Valley is insanely expensive.

I feel like anyone still looking for a great place to live anywhere in America in 2025 is playing checkers.. if you want to play chess- there are many many other countries to live where ur American dollar can stretch way farther than even in Idaho or northwest Arkansas or Florida or any other US place… It’s a great big world, might as well beat the mass exodus out of America and look into places like Costa Rica or Belize or yes Mexico.. Panama , Ecuador, Colombia .. if you want your US dollar to stretch even further then look at Vietnam , Malaysia, Laos et al…. Remote work has never been more accessible to many people, and if you are a person with options , then you’d be crazy to stay in 3rd world America imo .

Our Boise experiences seem different. Our house is a bit north of Harrison Ave. So the Bogus Basin Ski Area isn’t far based on weather. It’s like 16 miles. Boise is getting congested traffic wise, but since we don’t work I don’t really feel it. It’s certainly a city that is feeling some growing pains.
My biggest Boise complaint is that it’s getting way too hot in the summertime.

If I had to eat lunch outside everyday for 12 months of the year, I’d take Boulder over Baton Rouge without question.

We bought in Boise 5 years ago and we love it there. I personally think it is going to continue to grow. The equity in the house has done well.

This might be the most naive post I’ve ever read on here. Buying property and acquiring residency in other countries is way more complicated than the cost of real estate compared to the U.S. dollar.

Show me in my post anywhere where i even started to touch on the intricacies of buying property as a foreigner.. there are like 190-something countries in the world, and they all have different rules when it comes to foreigners purchasing properties.. Some allow you buy a condo but not a house.. some allow you to purchase property 50/50 along with your spouse if she is a native of the country.. but all this is greatly simplified , in my experience, by doing what 90% of people do when residing in a foreign country- which is just rent, since renting in most countries is dirt cheap compared to America.. but i think it’s obvious that you are most certainly the naive poster here .

Every one of you dorks that name some remote area wouldn’t last 3 weeks without a Walgreens close.
I’ve seen it dozens of times. A guy works in a plant in La and saves up. He buys 20 remote acres in Tn to retire to. 3 months in he realizes it isn’t easy and sells it for cheap and moves back to Prarieville on a 3/4 acre lot.
