Looking for a bump in salary and lifestyle? Then try San Francisco. The U.S. West Coast city has soared up the rankings to dislodge Zurich for the highest salaries and disposable income after rent, according to Deutsche Bank’s “Mapping the World’s Prices 2019.” Over the past five years alone, San Francisco has risen 7 and 21 places on both gauges.

“The rapid growth of the U.S. tech sector is helping San Fran beat traditional capital cities for incomes,” Deutsche Bank’s Jim Reid, Craig Nicol and Henry Allen wrote in the report. “Whilst its cost of living is increasing each year and rising up the cost rankings on most measures we cover, it still lags major global capitals. In terms of 2-bed rents however, it is only behind Hong Kong.”

When it comes to cigarettes and beer, Deutsche Bank’s “bad habits” index shows Melbourne has toppled Oslo as the most pricey city, followed by Sydney, Auckland and Dubai. For those who do go on a date in Zurich, it pays to stick to beers. According to the report, this is a rare area where the Swiss city is ‘relatively’ cheap, ranking 19th out of 54 in terms of expensiveness.

San Fran has an insane wage gap. You must be a tech giant to live there. Anything else you are homeless.

Housing in San Fran will eat up any bump in salary you get, there's no where to live.
It's beautiful my sister lived out there for years and I would make the trip once a year.
Reno, Tahoe, Muir Woods, Pebble Beach are all within a few hours drive

Always wondered how nurses and mid level health practitioners survive there

According to the article, San Fran is actually one of the best places to live for disposable income AFTER rent is accounted for.
Like someone said, if you can get a tech job there, you're probably a giant in the industry making bank and living the good life. If not, you're going to make message board posts about how San Fran is too expensive and a shithole.

Nurses in CA (especially SF) easily make at least 100K. I knew travel nurses that took staff jobs in SF back in 2007 that were making 100k back then.
Nursing union is strong there. You get mandatory overtime for any hours over 8 hours in a shift. Most nurses work 12 hour shifts(3 days a week). So they work 36 hours....with 12 of those hours at overtime rate.

They must live in an Oakland suburb and drive across the bridge. No way you can rent a decent place in San Fran “only” making $100k.

Friend of mine got his PhD at Stanford. His wife was a nurse while he was in school. She was making around $85k at the time, and they pocketed almost everything she made. That was 2009-2012.

Unlike San Francisco, I've never stepped in human shite walking out of a restaurant in BR

I pad 72 bucks for two burgers, one fry, and two diet cokes at a lunch spot.
So I'm gonna disagree

Whoah you're serious! Where did yall go for lunch? Typical burger joints are competitive for 1/2 lbs burgers in the $7-$15 range. You will find places that have a $20 burger, but its usually a hotel lobby restaurant with crazy margins.
