If she is throwing haymakers on the kid I would alert someone who could do more than I can. If I say "hey lady, stop hitting that kid" it will not stop her from doing it again.
If the woman slaps the kid across the face for talking back or something like that then I would be happy to see she doesn't let her kid walk all over her.

To the people who say mind your own business: that's true to a degree. But I've seen to much to see that as a principle. There's awful shite that goes down just out of sight of society and speaking out can do a lot. I was supposed to mentor a student whose now in a mental institution because his grandmother beat him in the head with a skillet too many times. And I shudder to think of no one had said anything to get him out of that home. Also, my time at that school made me realize that sort of shite is much much more common that 95% realize.

Busted a kid trying to shop lift some Nike Elite socks once while working at Academy. The grandmother went to town on him before I could even get a word in and it was beautiful. She took him by the back of the neck and bent him over her scooter whooping the shite out of him. All the while telling the kid they were going home and she was gonna whoop his daddy next.

Saw one once backhand a 2-3 year old to the ground in a dealership in was in. I told her if she did that again in my presence I'd break the arm she used.
She complained to the owner. He told her to shop elsewhere if she had a problem with that.
