Never. My dad was coonass and my mom is Italian. Dago doesn't bother me either.

My uncle’s nickname was Dago. And also “Hoola Doola the Backboard Roola” lol. People at work called him Hoola Doola. Totally irrelevant to the thread. Just thought it’s a hilarious nickname. Friends family called him Dago.

Hello cajuns. It has been brought to my attention that the term "coonass" could be considered problematic. So I, a white progressive liberal, am here to be offended in your stead, since you are all obviously too stupid to know you should be offended.

You can thank me for my service now.

It really sounds even more pathetic and silly when you say it out loud like that lol

Hopefully never, there’s 2 kinds of raising hell and Cajuns prefer the fun kind. The word does occasionally make my hackles go up when used in an obviously insulting manner, but I’m too proud to let you know it got under my skin and I don’t want to give anybody power over me so I roll with it. That’s rare though, the vast majority of the time it’s used in a playful manner and doesn’t bother me at all. I have returned fire when people have gone way over the line with it, but that’s just to push them back, I don’t want it to ever become like the n word. Now there is a sizable movement of hipster Cajuns that take great offense to the word, mostly around Lafayette, but I think it’s silly, I support their love of the culture and traditions, but I don’t like it when people get full of themselves, starts to make you a hypocrite.

I think, like the N word and other slang, it depends on context . My grandfather came from cajun country to start a business in BR in the 1940's and it was used against him as a derogatory term. He hated it and would get seriously pissed if he heard it used in front of him. But it can also be used as term of endearment. As someone who is of cajun heritage I dont particular like the word but its not something I get bent out shape over either.

I can see this. It’s all about your personal experience. Dam near every one of these words started as being derogatory. Coonass, Redskin, Redneck, etc. Then over the years, it gets watered down. My great-grandparents came over on a boat from Sicily. I bet they didn’t take too kindly to being called a WOP. Best way to take the power away from something like that is to wear it as a badge of honor. Idk if that’s how these words came to be accepted or not but it’s Bully Solving 101

The word coonass comes from the standard French word connasse, which means dirty whore or stupid person,”

Look into the history of when it was first used. There is absolutely nothing to be pissed off for when you understand its origin. It is actually a badge of pride.

Words that began as insults but were later adopted by their targets:

Quaker
Soap Opera
Disc Jockey

ETA: "Yankee Doodle" was originally a British insult song about uncivilized Americans

"Cowboy" comes from the same period and was an insult directed toward American farmers-turned-soldiers

As a yute, I learned that we should be proud to be a Coonass! I once had a front car tag that said, “Registered Coonass”. So, it’ll never bother me to be called a Coonass.

See that’s different though. Calling you a coonass in a way that’s “matter of fact” vs intentionally demeaning makes the words used irrelevant. It’s all about context. Or should be. For instance, look at Morgan Wallen. Was his intent to call his neighbor a “bad black people” name? frick no. He was calling him a bitch and it should be treated as such.
Somebody walks UP TO your tailgate and says “what you frickin coonasses up to?”...you’re up pouring them a beer in seconds
Somebody walks BY your tailgate and says “wtf are these fricking coonasses doing?”...it’s prolly go time
So it wasn’t the word, it was their intent

Referring to myself and other Cajun people as coonasses around the "woke" crowd gives me great joy. They seriously don't understand it, and one even told me it was racist against African Americans ( ).
