Some scientific chick was talking about it on the news a little while ago. I was in the middle of something, so I didn't really pay that much attention, but from what I caught, she seemed to be saying good things about how it was doing.

It’s my understanding that physicians have the okay to prescribe it based upon their personal understanding of the drug. There are no FDA-approved trials IIRC.
This would make any evidence of efficacy remain anecdotal.

Th recommendation on daily dosage is 200-400 for an adult. So basically in this one study they overdosed the patients and many died. No wonder it failed. I could do a study on just about any drug and make it look fatal if I give all the test subjects massive overdoses.

Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-protozoa drug. Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium protozoa. COVID-19 is caused by the SARS CoV-2 virus. Very different organisms. It’s bewildering how this drug suddenly became an anecdotal cure for COVID-19.

It doesn’t attack the virus. What it does is lessen the immune system’s reaction to the virus. It’s the body’s immune system’s overreaction to the virus that kills people.

I’m curious to know how this compares to other drugs typically used for this purpose, e.g. steroids or methotrexate.

I am not a doctor so I have no idea. But I’m guessing it’s been widely and safely used to deal with autoimmune issues for like 60-70 years or so it has to be pretty damn effective.
