Body shops (normally) are treated as the red headed step child at a dealership. It’s the appearance of convenience only. Body shops are notoriously low profit centers, especially at dealerships.

Salesman drool when they see a vehicle come in on a wrecker. If they can trade them out of that wreck, the vehicle heads to auction instead of the body shop.

So if you can find a new vehicle you want, trading in a used vehicle is catching top dollar in the current market. It’s insane.

The dealership where I bought my truck offered me $2500 more than I paid last year at my last oil change.

When China feels they've finished with that phase of economic terrorism.
Exporting our production to other countries is asking for more of the same.

I don’t remember which brand, that is about to run out of new vehicles

There's a Chevy dealer in St. Louis out of new cars. Their only new stock is in trucks and SUVs only.

Ford has trucks parked in huge lots all over Dearborn MI.

Most Ford office parking lots are full of new trucks.

I haven't posted in 7 months and had to jump on to help explain to you stupid mother frickers that Chinese chip manufacturing really isn't a thing. CPUs are made in Taiwan, the USA, and to a lesser extent Europe. China is 10+ years behind the bleeding edge.

Up here in Monroe, Ryan Chevrolet and Jim Taylor gmc have very few new vehicles. In fact roads by Ryan last week and the only truck they had in their lot was a 3/4 ton certified that they wanted $69,900 for. I drive by Jim Taylor Chevrolet in rayville everyday. They are the largest truck dealership in NELA and they have only a couple of trucks and a few Buick SUV’s.

Hopefully they are sourcing them from the US at least.

True, but I think the semiconductors in most automobiles aren't leading edge technology.

You know there once was a time in America where an enterprising young entrepreneur would recognize and act on the golden opportunity being presented to him by the massive demand in the market for a product with very low supply. We don’t do that now.

we do that now, but we don't do insane plans. there is no reason to invest billions in creating the factories, infrastructure, training, etc. only to open up for production after the supply chain issues are resolved

this isn't simplistic production like our factories did around WWII

Things are wayyyy more messed up globally with supply chains than consumers realize.

And it’s not just the automotive industry. I work in the heavy earthmoving equipment industry. Not only are new machines scarce, so are parts and components. Even some common parts like certain filters are taking weeks to get. I work for Cat so I’m more familiar with them. But talking with customers I’m hearing availability issues are across the board with other manufacturers like Deere, Volvo, and Komatsu.

Whatever you do don't feel sorry for the dealerships outside the salespeople. They fricking print money with the service departments. That's the real money maker for them. Spent two years working in the parts dept of a dealership when I was in college. Was a truly eye opening experience.

I work for GM in Baton Rouge and new cars are not the only issue… sales manager said a lot of vehicles are sold before they even are unloaded of the trucks.. and we used to have a idea of when a shipment would come in now it’s just random… also parts is turning into a nightmare 3/4 of parts are on back order, customer that have internal engine issues we are having to tell them 3 to 4 weeks and it only seems to be getting worse

Team Toyota's body shop is a big time money maker.

Except China has nothing to do with this chip shortage. It's amazing how dumb and misinformed so many Americans are.

The chips in question come from Taiwan, and the reason there's a shortage is because the car manufacturers cancelled their orders when demand fell at the beginning of the pandemic and electronics manufacturers purchased that capacity. So when the demand spiked for vehicles when the pandemic started to loosen it's grip, the car companies were caught flat footed. It's their own fault for not having the right foresight.

When I passed by All Star Chevrolet North on Plank by the Airport yesterday it looked like the were surprisingly well stocked.

On the other hand, the Ford dealer in Centerville, Ms. had about 6 vehicles on their lot the last time I passed by about a month a go.

Apparently one of the major car manufacturers (can’t remember which one, think it was GM) has basically said that they are going in the direction of moving away from the mantra of “a vehicle for every purse” meaning they have a wide range of vehicles to buy depending on your budget. And they are making better margins selling fewer higher end vehicles.

The world is getting way more expensive (inflated). I can’t imagine coming out of college, trying to start a family, but your first home, buy a decent car etc now. I’m only 35 but things have become significantly more difficult to get in just the last 10-15 years.
