People also need to learn how to simulturn and not stop 5 car lengths behind the car infront of them at red lights

Referenced post brought to you by someone with no concept of traffic flow, logistics, or common sense.
Plus, if the entire two lanes fill with traffic to the end, no one can possibly get mad at someone for cutting. It is the only sensible course of action. What is there to not understand?

It's fun to stop 1 mile back in your lane, but make no attempt to merge, just to prevent you from moving up. Usually the car behind me (i.e. you) is pissed, while everyone in the other lane approves. And surprise, surprise, I never have any problems merging when I do that. It's almost like people are happy to let me in...once we get to the end of course.
18 wheelers are great for this to.
This. The people that do this perpetuate the problem, often because they are scared of people that behave a lot like some of the posters in this thread. I always find that after I swing by them on the shoulder the traffic is actually moving enough 1/2 mile down the road to safely merge. Meanwhile that person has effectively stopped two lanes of traffic.

I have no problem with the situation in the OP. I have a problem when 3 lanes are at a complete standstill and people entering the interstate drive 3/4 of a mile in the entrance lane and expect to jump in front of thousands of cars sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

Good post. This is how we do it in LA. And we alternate at the end in a civilized fashion.

It's fun for inbreds maybe. You only see this level of stupidity in the South.

this is a lot like anal sex wif yo woman -- don't slam it in untl the last minute.

The problem is that zipper merging requires almost complete compliance to gain the attributed benefits, and in practice in many jurisdictions in the US it can actually be interpreted as illegal.

to one lane on a typical hwy...wait until the very end. The morons that try to switch lanes 100 yards too soon are the ones who hold up traffic because no one cares to let them in. When there's no road left it takes choice out of the matter (merge or wreck) thus speeding things up. This is the way things are intended to be. Edit: in this scenario traffic is moving along well, but it's still bumper to bumper in the left lane. Why come to a complete stop 150 yards before you have to? Only to sit there and wait for someone to let you in?
Good in theory, but it never works well.
Typically, I have to slam the brakes more whenever someone waits until the very end to merge.

I've always figured it was best to get up to the traffic's speed (so you are already a good ways down) then merge when an opening presents itself.

The reason I don't like letting people merge at the end is that we are going 10 mph and they race up to the front at 50 mph like they are super important
If they just eased up to the front, I'd see things differently

I can see that. But it sounds like not enough people are waiting to merge. Everyone just go to the end so no one is going 50 mph.
Posted on 3/11/15 at 7:02 pm to Easy
Well you have more people trying to not be assholes and merge too early to let that happen I guess

OP is a douche.

And when merging on to a larger highway from a ramp, accelerate to the goddamn flow of traffic. Seeing someone try to merge ahead of me at 45 MPH when everyone on the interstate is doing at least 70 MPH makes me apoplectic.
Also, NEVER tailgate another driver on an onramp. It's easy to adjust your speed to get ahead of someone merging onto the interstate (or letting them in). But when you have multiple cars that don't leave enough room between them it's a major pain.

No, no turns. Just two lanes going into one.
The left lane usually has 50-60 cars backed up for about 1/4 mile at most. the right lane usually contains 8-10 cars at a traffic light, most of whom attempt to merge left as soon as the light turns green (200-300 yards before the right lane ends). The left lane is moving 10-15 mph and its bumper to bumper. The car trying to merge left usually comes to a stop with their blinker on.... just waiting to switch lanes. Meanwhile I'm behind this idiot who has plenty of road in front of him with NO traffic.
It's painfully obvious that they should use the rest of the road and slowly merge into the remaining lane.
Anyone who disagrees simply loves traffic jams. Again, I'm not surprised by the overwhelming ignorance in this thread. It is apparent daily on BR area roads and highways.

I start in the right lane at the traffic light and I remain in the right lane until it ends about .2 miles ahead. There are 60 cars in the left lane most of which are pussies, and 8-10 cars in the right lane, two of three of which are intelligent drivers who use the entirety of the road in front of them.
The other six or seven try to merge left immediately. That is dumb and it holds up traffic.
