So you separate audio and video at the source and send audio to the receiver and video to the TV?

No..I go HDMIs to the TV..Then I use one optical cable to the receiver..I don't need to change inputs on the receiver when I change to another source...This also allows me to not have to watch everything with surround sound.

FWIW, depending on the TV you can lose a lot of audio quality this way. but its really a pick your poison type setup, you gain and lose something with each setup. I do the setup this way in my bedroom, because we rarely use the surround sound

I realize this but why take up an HDMI for it. Fiber optics also work better. Also, if he's going to run a gaming console to it and wants to use surround it ain't gonna happen with HDMI.

Tha hell are you talking about? HDMI goes from the cable box to receiver. Receiver breaks out the audio and sends the video to your TV via the HDMI out. HDMI doesn't support surround sound? News to me. The receiver will send a better audio signal than the tv will. I feel like I am taking crazy pills.

What you're missing is that the TV only has HDMI inputs, not outputs. You can't run everything through the receiver because then you won't have video.

What? I have 4 HDMI inputs going to my receiver, which switches them and passes everything to the tv via 1 HDMI out. I have no issues with audio or video from any of my devices (Roku, tablet, cable, and Blu Ray)

That's newer shite. I've never had enough HDMIs to do it.

New as in, been out for 5 years at least. HDMI switching has been available on receivers forever now.

I have, and just saw a post on this very page suggesting that using the audio out from the tv is better.

Dude, not AUX out. Optical audio, two different things. We're not talking fricking red, yellow, and white AUX cables here bro.

No shite, but when your crappy tv audio system translates the audio from the HDMI to the Optical cable, there is a loss in quality. This is what receivers are meant to do, but not tvs.

There is no loss on PCM, 5.1, or 7.1 with optical. If you've got a TV better than that congratulations, I've got a cookie for you.

There's also no ground interference, which is why I brought it up to the OP to begin with.

the vast majority of the time you have a loss of audio quality when you use your TV to process the signal to your AV components. you wont hear it until you have side by side comparisons, but there is a difference.

this. The loss has nothing to do with the optical cable, we all get that. The loss is in the tv's processing of the audio from the HDMI in to the optical Out

If the choice is between buying an optical audio cable or buying a new receiver I'm gonna go with the cable. The difference between the two is negligible.

Fair enough. I also only have 2 HDMI in on my TV, so the receiver (with 4 HDMI in) is the way to go for me to get 4 devices instead of only 2.
