Probably 91/92 or thereabouts I got prodigy with a new computer I purchased, a super fasts 286 DX. I installed it on my computer and couldn’t quite figure it out. It wasn’t until a few years later that I got AOL that I actually got hooked to getting online.

I remember seeing a commercial where a guy at a party asked a girl for her number and she gave him something that looked like gibberish to me and I thought it was her giving him a bogus number to let him know she wasn't interested.

Turns out it was an email address. They were introducing email as the new way to communicate but at the time I had no idea what it meant

Oh! I misread your post and imagined it wrong. I was picturing a real man in his underwear, holding a lightsaber. Lol

Btw, I don't think he is wearing a suit...lol

When it first began, it was BBS boards. All shareware. It was so exciting. We thought: "All these people sharing all these great little games and stuff for free. This is going to be so awesome to have everyone giving away all this free stuff!"

Boy were we ever wrong!

First heard about it in the early eighties. A co-worker was developing some code and was exchanging emails and files with some other people working on the same problem.

But you weren't wrong!

How many free apps/games do you have on your phone right now?

There are thousands of free programs for PC.

There are entirely free operating systems, and nearly every program that runs on them is not only free but also open source!

Any many of the "traditional" software companies are embracing open source.

Early 90s for me. You could buy a "yellow pages" book at SAMS of all the Internet sites back before there was "WWW". You had to know the actual address. Was not quite as thick as a Baton Rouge phone book at the time.

My first run in with the internet was called ethernet. Was doing some engineering work for some LSU physicist during the late 80s and they wanted to be able to send email to different countries so they had to wire the bldg. for it.

Still called ethernet, still very much in use, still very much part of the physical networks on which the internet is built.

Usenet binaries often had APE and FLAC (lossless) entire albums to download. I found the Trick or Treat Fastway soundtrack on there when I couldn't find the CD in print anywhere.
