When did you first hear about the internet and what was your impression?

I was in 11th grade. It was 94. I had heard of people chatting on computers at some libraries, but I had no idea what it was all about. I only knew people to use computers for games and bills.
Then these creepy commercials about "a information superhighway" a this girl in the desert talking about there being no more "there," only a "here." This crap freaked me out! I still had no idea and still did not know what the internet was. My friend's dad later told me the commercials were about a thing called "the internet," and he also said the internet was useless, unless you wanted to check the stock market or book airline tickets. I was not impressed.
I did not use the internet until late 1996 in Barstow, California. I was an MP in the USMC. We used the internet to communicate with other departments and with the San Bernadino Sheriff's office and CHP. I still didn't realize it could do more.
Then in late 97, my ex-SIL, showed me how the internet could find pics of anything, including boobs.
Then I understood the internet.
It wasn't until mid-98 that I bought our first computer and signed up with Coastal Communications. It cost something like 19.95 a month for 20 or 30 hours. I was mesmerized!
Then in early 2002, I had grown sick of yahoo sports chat rooms. I wanted to talk to more people about LSU football and baseball! I googled and found this dump shortly after the LSU vs Texas game in January/Feb of 2002. That was what really got my attention! It wasn't until I found Tigerdroppings that my true obsession with the internet began.
94-information superhighway
possible first internet commercial 1989
94--No more "there"!!!!!!
95--AOL saves a man's evening!

We always had computers in my house because my dad was interested in them.
When I was in HS, we got some service called Compuserve. It connected with a modem but was pretty much just an online encyclopedia. It had pics of Cindy Crawford in bikinis though Took 5 minutes for one to load.

We had Juno, which I believe was email only, in the mid 90s. The first time I logged onto the internet was in 96 at LSU for some science camp. Looked up Atlanta Braves stats

93. I was a kid and we were the only people I knew who had internet at home. It was slow as shite but I loved the chat rooms.

It wasn't really like the internet of today. I'm guessing that most people got regular internet service in their homes in the 1996-2001 timeframe.

My brother n law as an IT guy and on a visit to his house, he showed me his computer which was hooked up to a work modem and had the internet.
He let my play around on it and I thought I was on the World Wide Web while trying some searches, but I had never left the Yahoo site on which he placed me.

I993/94 - in Boulder- an EarthLink (?) programmer unloaded slowly an image of a naked Japanese girl and explained it to me.

It had to have been sometime in 1994 for me.
I watched Cartoon Network a lot back in those days, and CartoonNetwork.com was the first website I ever remember being advertised on television. We also got our first desktop computer that year. The very first website I ever visited was....CartoonNetwork.com.
I had to say, my first impressions of the internet were kind of meh. It took what seemed like an hour for the website to load and you couldn't do much with it when it finally did load. If there were chatrooms around in those days, I wasn't allowed to go into them because I was too young. It wasn't until the turn of the century and the advent of cable internet that it really became worth my time.

we had a service around 1992 or 93 called Prodigy. It was the Pong equivalent of the internet. Just got baseball scores and things like that.
It wasn't until 1998 that I got my first PC with "real internet". I remember pictures took a lonnnnggggg time to download on 56K

From this hippie / guru-type. He was all optimistic about it, but I remember thinking it sounded like it would kind of ruin my computer hobby.
