So crippled is OK if they get a check from the government?

And N-wrestling? What channel is that on? Asking for a friend.

Well some folks are saying that there's a difference between dwarfs and midgets.
Yes. Midgets are an extremely tiny (pun intended) subset of dwarves.

How is midget offensive? I think it's just non-PC, or is there a difference?
Little people have told you that they think it's offensive. They are offended by it. I don't know what else to tell you.

I do know that comedian Brad Williams, a dwarf, famously is not offended by being called a midget.

I assumed dwarf was bad.
Dwarf is medically accurate, is preferred to midget, but is less preferred than little person.

I saw a hand-painted sign in Cullman County that advertised 'female midget wrestling'. I'm tempted to eat a small dose of mushrooms and have a lark.

Exactly. Except for the N word, most of the offensive terms did not start that way. Midget, imbecile, moron, described conditions. The most recent one is "retarded." It was an actual diagnosis. Now the diagnosis is "intellectual disability." There were books written by experts during the 1970s on mental retardation and how to train the "retardate" in basic skills of daily living. Eventually intellectual disability will be deemed offensive and another label will be invented.

Just watched a video and you totally misrepresented how that conversation went down between the two contestants. Smh.

ETA: Article with video of Big Brother conversation referenced in the OP

That's poor logic.

Most of those medical terms became insults, which led to the term being non-PC when used correctly.

If people start using intellectual disability as an everyday insult, which I highly doubt, why shouldn't the medical term change?

I can see that, crippled is a very, not a noun.

That accident crippled him.

You good with it used this way?

When it comes to the word crippled, for me (and I am sure a lot of other people as well), it's the perception of the word.

For whatever reason, there are people who will assume that if someone is in a wheelchair and had an obvious physical disability, that they are also mentally disabled. Or at least, not able to function (socially) with others. So they will treat a "crippled" person different.

People are more likely to have and show sympathy towards someone who is "crippled" (or that they describe or hear others describe as crippled).

If you say "that accident crippled him", it really all depends. Did this person break their leg or are they in a coma? If someone uses this way, I wouldn't take it personal if it's not directed towards me, but it has a different meaning to different people and by using it when talking about that person, you could be creating a certain perception of them, in the mind of others.. And how they define the word. If that makes sense.

Where does the OT stand on elf?
How about trolls, when referring to ugly little people? (which are coincidentally the same as the internet version)
What do you call a person with a hunchback now?
This thread brings up so many issues. Almost every word we used as a kid is offensive now. And no, we did not use the Nword.
