when did it become PC to take offense to a derogatory word?
I'm genuinely interested in the genesis of it becoming derogatory. I won't argue the validity, because that's not for me to decide. But when did the switch flip and why?
From a word meaning standpoint, it's "kin" would be occidental, which is neither offensive, nor commonly used to reference westerners.
The whole thing is just interesting to me from a language history standpoint, I guess.

I can't keep up with all this new PC lingo. What do the Asians want to be called now? Just Asians? That's cool, just let me know. Thanks.

Why isn't the term "European-American" used more?

Asian refers to a person.
If you watch or read European news Asian actually refers to a person who rapes white people or commits violent crimes. Usually that person is from the Middle East, often used as a synonym for refugee.

Maybe because Europe is filled with diverse countries and cultures who, at various times during history, have brutally murdered the shite out of each other.
For example.
You'd never confuse a paddy and a wop. Or a Polack and a surrender monkey.

My family has been in the states since the early 1700s. I honestly couldn't give two shits about my "European" heritage. I'm a goddamn American and nothing else.

This literally makes zero sense.
As though this isnt true for continents like Africa and Asia.

Which is exactly the point. You shouldn't lump various peoples into some hyphenated version of a continental origin.
European American is as stupid as African American or Asian American.
Just call them Chinese or Spanish or Nigerian or Russian or Indian or Finnish or what have you.
And hell, not everyone from Africa is a Negroid and not everyone from Asia is a mongoloid.

well did not know this...
quote:
It is now politically incorrect to use the word “Oriental,” and the admonition has the force of law: President Obama recently signed a bill prohibiting use of the term in all federal documents. Rep. Grace Meng, the New York congresswoman who sponsored the legislation, exulted that “at long last this insulting and outdated term will be gone for good.”

calling them Asian is more "racist"
And some hate that term too.
I saw a meme the other day where someone was flipping out because the supermarket had an "Asian" wine section.
