The next time I hear someone refer to any of these folks as "Asian" would be the first time
Look at all those Asians.

I always though that Oriental kind of went out of style about the time Occidental did.

When did the term "oriental" become "derogatory"?
"Oriental" is not derogatory per se, but it is when used to refer to people. Referring to an oriental rug or vase is not derogatory, but referring to Asian people as "the Orientals" is derogatory.
quote:
Usage note
Asian is the most commonly used term referring to people in or from Asia, especially East Asia. In American English, Oriental as a noun or adjective applied to people is outdated and has become a sensitive term to be avoided. It is associated with a bygone era in which Asians had subordinate status and their culture was perceived as strange and exotic. Also, the origin of the term Oriental represents a Eurocentric view of geography, since the Orient, or East, is east of Europe.
However, Oriental is a neutral, inoffensive term when used as an adjective describing Asian culture or things from Asia. Similarly, the term Asiatic is usually offensive when referring to people, but neutral when referring to Asian culture, animals, etc. Though Asian is an acceptable ethnic designation in most contexts, it is best to be as specific as possible, rather than to group all Asians into a single cultural identity. In general, people of South, Southeast, and East Asian origin prefer to be identified by their country of origin: for example, Indian, Pakistani, Indonesian, Korean, Japanese, or Chinese. The people of the Middle or Near East and Polynesia are not referred to as Asian.

Of course the real question is:
Was the blonde chick in Big Trouble in Little China supposed to be Chinese/Asian/Oriental somehow? Or was it just totally because she had green eyes?

Bost spokesman George O'Connor said Bost's use of Orientals was a reference to sessions during China's Cultural Revolution when individuals were publicly humiliated and subjected to verbal abuse by a crowd.
The term originated from the use of maps... way back in the day maps had the Far East at the top of the image. That's right; East was on top, West on the bottom, North to the left, and South to the right. So, in order for you to properly orient your map, you had to turn the Far East to the top. Thus the Far East became known as the oriental part of the map and eventually people from that part of the map became known as Orientals.
This has never had a negative connotation. It is no different than referring to people from Africa as African or people from the southern states as a Southerner. It is only very recently, and only in America, that this term has for some reason been labeled as pejorative. It is social engineering run amok. These snowflakes ran out of real shite to bitch about long ago and have been pushing agendas of "change for the sake change" and "all old things must be bad" for years now.
The term Oriental is only even hinted as being pejorative in North America. Everywhere else it is simply a descriptor.
One of the best moments of someone realizing that these change-of-thought movements are really only germane to the US was when I saw a super liberal MSM reporter interviewing a black man from London. She kept trying to interject race as an issue, which it clearly wasn't, and she kept referring to the man as African American. He let it slide the first couple of times and just tried to make his case, but it was obvious he was becoming annoyed with the interview. After she said it again he interrupted her and said "ma'am I am neither African nor American. I am a black man from Essex."

Maybe we should consult with Donna Chang to see what she has to say on the matter.
On another note...before I was born, my parents (mother is half japanese) had a dog named Jap.
