There seems to be a trend in people scared of clowns, I think it is "cool" to be scared of them. With that said, Pennywise did frick up clowns for a lot of people that's where it probably started from.

A clown is a derivation of the Jester. A jester was the one person who could get away with saying nasty things to anyone, even the king. They've never been benign.
