Do you think yall would have more recruits if people respected and liked you? What kind of person wants to work in a profession where everyone hates you and is scared of seeing you?

All the people who hate on cops and talk shite about them nonstop, I'm very curious what they'd do when their house is being robbed, their family kidnapped, their kids raped, etc
They would call a detective, just as they do now. Not a whole lot would change. I guess maybe you would lose that small chance the accused would slip up and get picked up for something mundane.
quote:
It's fun to hate on the police because they make you late by ticketing you when you're speeding but people who think they aren't valuable and aren't NEEDED (which they very much are) are just flat out ignorant.
Cops suck. You can't really argue that cops don't suck. People in impoverished neighborhoods don't want to talk to police because they are sick of being messed with. This is a huge problem. To say we need police is disingenuous at best. What we need is better community leadership and education. We don't need dudes running around in special operator costumes with military hardware jamming up people for bullshite or jumping out on people.
I was in Gonzales for work not too long ago and saw a fricking armored personal carrier. It's gross. frick the police.

Civil asset forfeiture now makes up a good chunk of LEO budgets. Without stealing from citizens charged with nothing, they might have to find employment elsewhere.
The mere existence of cash can be used as alleged existence/intent of drugs or sale of drugs. Of course the LEO don't actually think that, but they need the dinero.

A 24 year old high school graduate with a badge should immediately, and without question, be considered an authority figure and respected when addressing the senior citizen/military vet/corporate executive that had the audacity to question the moving violation being issued.
Sounds to me like you have the attitude of "look here sonny, I fought overseas for your freedom before you were even born...so I'm not getting a speeding ticket today!"
What does someones military background or executive status have to do with them not breaking the law?
quote:
That badge doesn't make him any smarter, more competent of the law, or less of a douchebag.
But it does allow him to enforce the law, which is his job. Whether it's a new driver, your grandma, military vet, or corporate executive as you said...none of them are allowed to break the law. So they should be ticketed if they do. Not complicated.
Also funny that you keep calling cops meatheads and douchebags. I'm willing to bet that you personally have had bad experiences with cops (probably because of the mindset you've expressed in this thread) and they weren't having any of it, so now you carry that grudge with you.
Meanwhile I, someone who apparently enjoys having my rights violated, have had nothing but pleasant experiences with law enforcement and haven't recieved a ticket in years even when I've been completely guilty of the violations in quesiton.
quote:
Respect is earned, not given.
That's a 2 way street. If you act like an arrogant prick, which I imagine you probably do, you're going to get ticketed. If you act like an adult and cooperate with what they're asking, more likely than not you're on with your day in a few minutes.

So should i assume that everyone i talk to knows more about my job than me?
You just assume all cops are idiots and know nothing about the law?

Innocent citizens should not have to resist the urge to defend their rights when confronted with confrontational meathead police just because it will keep them out of jail. It's the smarter thing to do, yes; but the fact that you have to relinquish your right to defend your rights as an innocent civilian to stay out of jail is absurd.
Totally agree......but do you press your understanding of your rights to the point you are shot or arrested? Or do you take them to court where if your rights have been violated, you are then vindicated and possibly compensated?
At what point are there diminishing returns for standing up for your rights?

It's pretty amazing what we expect LEO's to do. I'm not sure there's many careers that expect you to know so much detail and do it in life/death situations in such a short time.
I've said the problem with law enforcement goes far beyond individual officers. The whole CJ system is fricked up.

I would articulate my objections and rights...but at the end of the day if I were dealing with an unreasonable moron with a gun...I would choose to meet him in court where my rights would trump his moronity. That is where the odds are staked in my favor, if using your argument, that you are right and they are wrong.
When it comes down to the word of an LEO and a private citizen, who do you think will win?
Not that there's much you can about it anyway- my point in asking is that most people don't realize in the field their rights don't mean jack shite.

People in impoverished neighborhoods are also more likely to be involved with illegal activities, do you agree?

Ok, so how will laws be enforced? Just employ thousands more detectives?

bullshite....as in the law? Yeah, those pesky laws keep getting in the way of people living life man.

In 1996, 200 ppl around the country applied for 2 positions JPD had open.
2015, the department couldn't fill three positions starting at 58k-65k and accepted lateral transfers from another Alaska city.

What do you think all of the safety precautions people do at plants are for? all the tests and certifications you have to get, permits, LOTO, etc. It's so not a single person dies.
So whose rights are violated by the policy that requires a lockout/tagout, or the one that requires you tie off a lanyard? These personal safety policies require only compliance from the user, not the 99 other people that user may encounter in a given week. Can you not see a difference?
quote:
but you think b/c you don't want to be inconvenienced, we'll let a cop get shot in the face on a routine traffic stop every now and then?
I'm pretty confident treating citizens with the same respect the officer expects to receive will not get him shot in the face. I see that you feel the "self preservation at all costs" mantra is appropriate. I disagree. Treating the 99 in the same manner that you treat the 1 will get you home in one piece, but it won't get you the respect you obviously feel they deserve.

Cops will continue to reap what they sow; it's already becoming evident with their nation-wide reputation as untrustworthy and more dangerous than helpful.
What do you expect when you require a HS diploma or Associate's degree from a CC, while paying just above the poverty line?
You attract self-conscious simpletons with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. The difference in a cop and criminal is such a thin line, it's a shame it's only going to get worse.

I have had my house robbed before. It would have been exactly the same with or without police. I would file a claim with insurance if the items were insured and expect to never see my stuff again.

I'm curious how the recent terror attacks in Paris, California, etc. make people feel about this issue - police militarization i think is how most people refer to it. Should that be reserved for specialized units? How would that effect quick response capability in an attack?
I personally am pretty torn on the subject.

frickin A...why does everyone here just assume others are talking in absolutes?
There are good citizens & bad citizens.
There are good cops & bad cops.
If they both occur at even close to the same percentage, then there are alot of a-hole cops.
Are we in agreement on this?

you've missed the entire point. A police appraoching any situation does and SHOULD do so with the mindset that this person might attempt to kill them. That's the nature of the work. Once a dialogue is started, then yes it's absolutely reasonable to expect the officer treat you with the same respect that is given back to them. But when first approaching a vehicle or a scene, the officer has no idea of your intentions.

Why does being shot even ENTER THE frickING DISCUSSION unless I've directly physically threatened him with life-threatening force of some kind?
I don't have the right to assault a cop in any way, and if I did, I'd expect to be summarily arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but I have the right to verbally stand up for my rights as an INNOCENT civilian.

Why do you suppose they resist body cameras?

Yes, exactly.
Just like there are bad doctors and teachers and bus drivers and janitors and nurses and every other profession you can think of.
We see a news story every week these days of teachers sleeping with a student. Yet when it's registration time in the summer, most parents don't think "I don't know about this whole school thing...what if they try to abuse our little girl". But people do hold the actions of a small minority of police against the entire profession. Why?
