Believe it or not, the small town Mississippi neighborhood I lived in from 1968-1973 wasn't much different than the one where the kids in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' grow up. The houses, the metal fences, the backyards with gardens, all looked the same. We cut through other people's yards, tried to look in windows, and knocked & ran too. A man with a mule used to come once a year, and plow everyone's garden. He, and other people on my street, wore overalls daily. The older people sat in green rocking chairs doing whatever it was they did with powdered snuff. It would be all over their shirt and blouses. We smoked rabbit and grapevines.
It may have been the late 60's and early 70's instead of the 30's, but Mississippi hadn't changed much.

To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite.
Some others I can think of:
The Last Picture Show (if you consider Texas in the south)
The Man in the Moon
A Gathering of Old Men
The Yearling and Cross Creek
On the lighter side:
Green Acres
Petticoat Junction

Wasn't much different where I grew up either. It was definitely a kids world.

quote:Linklater has said the movie was based upon his time at Bellaire and Huntsville HS in the mid 70's
It's weird to watch that and realize how similar a place like Austin was in the timeframe it was set to much of Louisiana, and wonder how much that has likely changed in present times.
Spring HS ( go Lions) was two HS down 45 from Huntsville and we played Bellaire is baseball all the time those years
suffice to say theres a good chance Pink was based on me
