Can someone tell me the plane in this pic? My pawpaw flew in WWII but never talked about it and so we never knew really which plane he flew

I think the picture here was from when he was in training

Probably a Stearman. Both the USN and USAAF used them as their primary trainers.

You can't see the tow vehicle but it could just as easily be a truck. The Germans had some pretty heavy duty half tracks as well. This photo is kind of confusing because behind the seaplane the wheels with spokes have nothing to do with what's going on in the picture. The aircraft is on its beaching gear which allows it to move on the ground since it has no wheels of its own

We know he flew over Europe multiple times but really nothing else. He never talked about shite. The training photo is all we really have

Well if you have his name you can probably search for him through the internet military records and find out perhaps what squadron he flew for and when

True. The BV 138 has no landing gear. It is dry docked on a trailer with wheels.

So what pulls the trailer?

Edit -

1/72 scale trailer I’ve built for the BV138 that I am also building:

You want the military designation?Because that's a Boeing Stearman.

Always been partial to the English Electric Lightning.
The over/under engine arrangement was unique.
Lucky enough to see them used as chase planes for Tornado's and Eurofighter Typhoons. Party piece; take off and full afterburner vertical climb.

Yeah - that pilot was Rick “Biscuit” Lucas - went through advanced flight training with him. He and his RIO were very lucky. The mishap was attributed to something called “Afterburner Burn-Through” caused by a faulty afterburner can. This situation actually happened several other times, as well, although not all those crews were as fortunate as Biscuit and his RIO in punching out out alive. The Navy didn’t figure out the cause of the problem until the end of my ‘96 cruise. Due to the uncertainty, we flew that entire cruise under orders not to use burner unless in an emergency (…and there were a lot of “emergencies” )

The “D” engines were so powerful they couldn’t use full afterburner at takeoff else would basically melt JBD.

You mentioned others not so lucky but they only made a small set amount of D’s and could only outfit 2 squadrons. Was this in future years these happened? VF-11 is only one who lost one during the 94 cruise (which was first D cruise). I also know VF-31 lost 2 D jets in late 94 or early 95 (all 4 recovered) off San Diego. I believe that one was pilot error as both one was trying to take pics of the other inverted and clipped em and both splashed in Pacific Ocean.

My favorite as a kid. The sweeping wings were awesome. The F14s vs the Japanese Zeros in Final Countdown is an all time favorite.
