Start small, whatever you can put away each pay check and not notice do it. I recommend transferring 100 each payday to your savings. If you can do more great if you can do less still not bad too. You would be surprised at how fast it adds up. Also cut out unnecessary spending like eating out alot, learning to cook isn't that hard. If you like to go out and drink consume a few at home before you go out so you are not spending more for alcohol. Keep credit cards to a minimum, if you are in debt pay them off and if you use them try to pay them off monthly or not use it for another purchase until your last purchase is paid off. Contribute to a retirement such as a 401K especially if your employer matches, roth ira, traditional or some other investment. Don't buy a brand new or ridiculously expensive vehicle. Most of it comes down to smart decisions and not doing stupid shite with your money.

Eating out is the biggest bad habit my household has as far as money is concerned. Tons of wasted money.
Same here. We would save hundreds a month if we didn’t get takeout because we didn’t feel like cooking. It’s not even spent on enjoyable dining experiences; more just a lack of planning.

Learn how to do basic household repairs; no need to pay someone to do basic stuff around the house. You can basically buy the tools you need for the cost of hiring a professional.
YouTube is your friend for these too.

Come on now, ELT. Everybody has a freezer.
Another thing I do is buy a whole pork loin and cut it into roasts and chops myself. Same with large packs of chicken. Divide it up into individual meal portions that thaw quickly. You pay a better price this way.
We also do our own home repairs. In fact, we made a business out of doing it for other people because they are too lazy and would rather write the check to have it fixed. Cha ching! We roofed our own house and built a 400 sq. ft addition. Don't need to spend money at the gym when you do manual work -- you accomplish your goals while saving money and staying in shape.

Oooooo, you heated up a whole bowl of chilli and you didn't like it... Too bad ya little shite, that's what your eating til it's gone.
I’m bad about this. If there’s something cooked that I don’t like, I’ll go sit down somewhere or get takeout. It’s a bad attitude

Obviously designate a driver or even an uber is less expensive than a full night a drinking at a bar.

Make your own food. Make in bulk.

Live beneath your means and tithe.
You are going to work hard anyway, so major in something that pays well
Stay out of debt.
Invest in yourself, (businesses)
Save, save, save
Remember, if you save while you are young and look for opportunities, as you get older, money will not be a problem.

don’t agree with everything Dave says but the budgeting and cash only advice is great. And Don’t get fooled by card rewards programs.
I think that’s sound advice for lower income families. But for middle class, I’ve had a few thousand dollars of free car, flights, and hotels off rewards cards. I also pay everything in full every month. Balance that is not statement. I like seeing 0.00 owed.

That is why I am not a material girl. Don't give me diamonds, take me on an adventure or to a sporting event. Getting ready to go caving, ziplining, mayan ruin climbing, and canoeing in Belize. Do I need a wardrobe for that? Hell no!
The wife and I grew up not that well off. Making more in my first job after college than both of my parents did combined at the time made it hard to not get those material things I’ve always wanted. But I’ve gotten a lot better. I’m still working on the wife lol

Y’all inspired me to write a list of everything we enjoy cooking, so we have a reference. The biggest problem is I’m brain dead by the time I leave work, and he’s starving because he doesn’t eat during the day. So neither of us can think of anything. Now, we’ll have a list to use to plan for the week.

I don't spend it all.
Save 30% first. Spend the rest.

On weekends you could prepare chicken salad that could be snacked on with some carrot chips or celery sticks before dinner is ready. Or deviled eggs.
Then make a big pot of soup or stew or beans or chili, etc. Eat it for a couple of days then freeze the rest in manageable portions for thawing. Pretty soon you will have a lot of prepared meals in your freezer. Just set a reminder on your phone to put some in the fridge to thaw for that day. Use that phone to help you organize!
