High school demands these days can be prohibitive to having an after school job, especially if the kid is on a sports team or band or something. I swore my kids would work when they turned 16, but here we are and my 17 year old son only does a summer job because his time after school is so limited. He does a few odd jobs on weekends when his schedule allows, but hard to hold down a job somewhere and only work when he can.

I just couldn't tell if applicants were applying for a position they actually thought could be an immediate partnership, or if the poster was indignant that they'd ask about the ultimate potential of the position at an interview

And for some weird arse reason, a lot of teenagers today have no interest in driving, so parents can't even use the driving/car thing to get them to work.

Look at the used car market, gas prices, and repair costs. It would almost require a full-time job for a teenager to afford all of that and that's not including insurance. If I was a teenager in a non-rural setting I'd think long and hard about the hours necessary for me to afford a car.

Hey I agree with you on that. The entire fast food workers deserve this and that is just fodder for those people without anything to back it up

Walking into an interview at this moment wanting a stake in a company is a different thing. You better be bringing some major credentials and weight to the company.

Commercial construction is going to take a huge hit soon. Everyone kept promoting you had to go to college. Soon we will have more PMs with construction manager degrees than skilled craftsmen to do the job because they are all old and finally retiring.

I played 3 sports in high school and was still able to work, get good grades and get an academic scholarship. During football season I would work a double shift on Sundays at the movie theatre. I'd umpire as much as I could in the spring and do weekend/night games for the Rangers if possible. Then I'd work my arse off in the summer between my 3 jobs and still make it to summer football workouts.

I even worked 2 nights a week during football season when I was at TCU

All were asking for immediate partnership . I have two guys who are on a path to equity partnership now, both get a share of profits for 3 years before becoming equity partners in the company. Both have been with me for over five years.

It’s a weird inflection point here. Lot of plebs working in the corporate machine that could probably go work in basic food service and not take a paycut.

When I was 15 years old I got my first job....I was paid $5/hour plus time and a half for overtime....it was a summer job while in high school....I'd work 6 days a week/10 hours a day with only 30 minutes for lunch.....

A few years later...another summer job I went offshore....worked on an anchor handling boat....we worked 16 hours day but got paid $5/hour for every minute we were out there....so after 2 days we were already on overtime.....

I bought my first car for $2400 but I saved up for it. Was hard making $5.15 an hour with the Rangers and $6 an hour at the movie theatre but I did it. 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse. My parents didn't contribute a single penny.

Not sure if there are any decent cars out there these days for $2400.

my Dad had one or two people interview with his company that approached him with this, he had me sit in on the interviews to try and learn something, that's where I learned the poker face

This isn't the reason, unfortunately.

A lot of teenagers don't want to drive these days. It is strange. We had a thread on it a while back. The hitch rides and Uber.

in that case, that's crazy... people really do think their contribution is worth a lot more than it really is

I wonder if this depends on where you live. I couldn't imagine this being the case in upper middle class DFW suburbs(where I attended high school), but I could see this being the case in middle class and lower income areas or places with stronger public transit.

Less parents are making their kids work for their own money these days.

The labor shortages will be destructive for a while. We have having a full out blitz to hire people on the marine side and few people are interested. I think 2020 convinced a lot of people that work wasn't necessary.

The only path to immediate partnership in a company like mine would be to a licensed professional with a book of business (that's exactly how I started under the previous owner). There is no path to immediate partnership for labor or PM's. Business partnerships are like marriage, where if it doesn't work out the divorce process is UGLY.
