Know a former OP that quit Lyondell to be a full time fishing guide and smoke weed in the afternoon. He told his wife and she packed her shite and left.

Ok, that’s not because they can’t, that’s because they know the other guys will pick up the slack.

Again, anyone can do that job. Anyone. I’ve been around these people my whole life and they never change. Want to be respected like they are educated but they are uneducated. Just because you make money doesn’t mean you are smart.

No. Not anyone. Thats hyperbole and you know it. Anyone can do some rounds and write shite on a clipboard.

Being able to manage upsets and troubleshoot on millions of dollars of equipment is not something anyone can do.

And Ill line up former and current plant managers and engineers that will attest to it. Lets not shite on people who actually work for a living.

Refinery is nastier. Coker units belching black coke all over the unit. LNG probably a lot cleaner. Not sure about which is “safer to work in” or easier/harder to get hired into. Like others said, it helps tremendously to have a friend or relative working in a high position wherever. Like they say “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Sounds like they set impossible expectations for their employees

Well what I mean is if you got one when you were 18 and never got in trouble again and at 50 you applied you would get dinged.

Going off that George Bush and Tim Walz couldn't get in.

Check lines, valves, monitor plant boards, understand the process and make adjustments as needed (chemical facilities)...also oversee work in the unit. They permit all work and own the work (disputed) going on in their area.

Good operators are worth their weight in gold. I have been working for 23+ years in plants as an engineer and anyone that says different is wrong. Of course there's bad apples, but one thing I have learned is the IQ of your operators and engineers and maintenance techs is a lot closer than engineers would like to believe (that is, we are all pretty average). I have met some brilliant technicians, operators, specialists - as smart as anyone I've ever met. I have also met some dumb as hell engineers.

On that note, same for colleges attended. Some of the smartest engineers from lowly U of H, McNeese, Lamar, etc. Some of the dumbest/least common sense from Rice, Georgia Tech, MIT!
