LSU is bordered by several extremely high crime areas.

There is a new helicopter pilot school near the airport in BR. My buddy is in the program and they are all close to finishing their first year where they have to do several hours of flying with instructors. Maybe that is the reason for the influx of helis

The Marines are also flying the new AH-1Z Viper, which is basically a four bladed SuperCobra. I haven't seen any of those, or at least I don't think I have. I assume the four bladed variant would sound different than the two bladed models
I could hear it coming, didn't count the blades but it was very loud and could hear it from more than a mile away. It was flying pretty low. Not tree top, but low...

That describes what I usually hear and then see. They're loud, have a distinct rotor "whoop", and are usually flying pretty low - I'd say around 500'.
They sound significantly different than the Army Blackhawks flying out of Hammond. I might mix up the sound of a Cobra approaching with a Chinook, but not a Blackhawk.

Cool fact.
The Cobra is nothing but an attack Huey.
Same motor,blade,frame.
The sound you hear is the tips of the rotors breaking the sound barrier.
