will never understand this. There is a difference between being wasteful and being ridiculously frugal. Why have any money if you refuse to enjoy it? You can't spend it when you're dead.

My dad did the same thing for a deer he hit on I-10. By the time he turned around someone else was already stopped and was starting to saw the horns off. My dad let him keep the horns and the guy helped my dad load the deer into our trunk. Quite a memory.

ETA we didn’t do this bc we were frugal. We did it bc we were dirt poor.

We were rather poor growing up. Didn’t have much in the way of anything but I had cousins whose other grandparents had money.

This guy was former head of a plant in WBR Parish. He was notoriously frugal.

I remember going grocery shopping with them a couple times on a Saturday at about 13-14 yrs old. He he had a style of shopping that I call Want and Need.

You would go through the store and fill the basket up with what you want. Then at the end, you’d only keep what you needed and put back what you just wanted. He’d also know exactly how much it was within $1-2 by the time we got to the register.

It gave him the satisfaction of buying stuff apparently without buying it. Something his mother (early 1940s?) used to do this because they were poor growing up.

It infected me. I started doing this when I became an adult. I still do it. My wife hates it. Drives her nuts. Fill the buggy up, assess what you actually just need. Put back the rest.

Frank Sinatra loved to steal silverware at Vegas hotels and restaurants.

We had standing orders from management to offer him a complimentary set upon seating him.

My grandfather had some money later in life. I remember he used to go shopping at the dump for things.

I can still remember him bringing home an old tire that still had some tread on it, a set of encyclopedias he sold to a barber for haircuts, and an old dog somebody dropped off.

Also tons of scrap metal that just accumulated behind the shop until he moved because he couldn’t see it go to waste.

My ex’s dad is a millionaire. Dude drives a Ferrari, was talking about buying a mcClaren. Goes on expensive vacations. But for whatever reason he has this infatuation with buying shitty Invicta watches. I’m pretty positive the guy has dropped at least 15k on them. I truly don’t get it.

My grandfather insisted upon splitting scotch tape in to small sections for use. Remember him chewing out my dad for using a regular portion. "Stop being so goddamn wasteful!"

I had a friend who would have old fishing reels. He would go to Bass Pro and buy new ones. Bring them home, exchange all the internal new parts out of the new reel for his old worn out reels. He would then take the reel which has the new outer casing but old parts inside back to Bass Pro, say there was something wrong with it and get another replacement. He would then do the same thing about 3 times then move on to Walmart

Owner of a Insurance Company here in BR over on Gooodwood. Got down on his knees to turn off the surge protector under all of the employees desks even though the computer and everything that was plugged into it was turned off, because that glowing on/off switch on the surge protector was using electricity.
