What's the criteria for determining a bad beat?

Much better explanation than anyone else gave. Thanks for taking the time to type that out.

That said, most players tip 10% on "typical"

10% of 500k is 50k. Not bad for a day of dealing.

On a side note, it’s kind fu%cked up that uncle sans gets to double dip. He gets tax from the players and dealer.

Who tf said 10% is customary?

A dealer, obviously.

It would be fricking nuts to tip $25,000 on a $250,000 bad beat award. $2500 maybe, if she's good looking. More like $1,500 or $1,000.

Why is 10% customary? It seems crazy to me to give a dealer $2500 much less $25000 even if you hit a $250k jackpot just because of custom.

I did read it. That still doesn't explain who determines what is or isn't a bad beat and why. Some would be obvious, others not so much. If it's left up to someone's discretion it's a recipe for shenanigans.

Exactly. How many times can a person say 350 and still be funny? It’s like laughing at the same joke after hearing it 8 times. You have to me mentally slow or have a short memory.

Right, I've seen it at least 350 times today.

Bonus points for PeteROse chiming in on a betting thread.

The smallest hand that can trigger a bad beat is set by each casino so they can tailor the expected frequency they want bad beats to happen at.

If the lowest hand to qualify is 4 eights, and that hand gets beaten. You get the bad beat.

Any hand better than 4 eights that gets beaten, is a bad beat (i.e. 4 aces loses to a straight flush, or a straight flush loses to a higher straight flush)

Why am I giving the dealer a tip at all? It’s not like he can stop dealing to me, and he’s already making his hourly, which is what he/she signed up for.

Depends on the casino. At Harrahs Nola its quad 5s beaten. I play in LA a good bit at the Commerce and its aces full of 10s there.

If you don't tip the going rate, you may have "very bad luck" in all poker rooms anywhere near you for years to come. Just sayin'.

The guy who recently hit the bad beat at Harrahs got around $117,000 and tipped $5,000.

Each casino has its own rules, but generally speaking it goes something like thus:

If you lose with four fives or better you become eligible provided both of your hole cards play and both of the hole cards of the opponent who beat you play.

Say if you hold 5 6 of diamonds and the board shows three sixes and two tens and your opponent holds pocket tens then you aren’t eligible because your 5 doesn’t play.

But if you held ace 6 of diamonds you would be eligible because your ace would play.
