Everybody has that one moment in life where a good humbling changes the way you think or act, and a lot of the time that comes in the form of an arse-whoopin. I was about 16 when mine came. Up until that point, you think you’re the baddest dude on the planet

Don’t run a cleaning rod down the barrel of an M60 if there’s one in the chamber.

A monk goes out alone in a boat to meditate. While he’s sitting quietly with his eyes closed, another boat bumps into his. He gets furious and opens his eyes ready to yell at whoever disturbed him. But then he sees the other boat is empty; it had simply drifted loose. His anger disappears, and he realizes: the anger was already inside him—the empty boat only bumped it awake.
I try to remember the other person is merely an empty boat. The anger is within me and I need to manage that better.
The “empty boat” helps because it separates the event from your interpretation of the event. When you think, “They disrespected me,” anger rises fast. But when you think, “Maybe this was accidental, unconscious, or not about me,” the anger often loses its fuel.

make sure the plug is in the boat before you launch
A mistake most people make exactly once. The rest throw a spare plug in the glovebox, hopefully the boat's glovebox!

Don't tie a rope to a swing set and the other end around your waist and try to fly like superman. Especially if said knot around your waist is a slip knot.
It was hurting really bad and I couldn't get out so I tried to wiggle out. Ended up around my neck somehow and me hanging there.
Mom saw me through the living room window and ran out and got me down. Damn near hung myself.
And then she beat my arse

If you work for someone else, you are almost never irreplaceable at work. Don't be naive to think you are.

Almost the hard way, but a lesson well learned. Don’t assume that a woman with a large stomach is pregnant.
At a company picnic, a couple of female employees that I knew approached me with a concern that a wife of an employee was putting down alcohol at a pretty good rate and they were concerned about the health of her unborn child. They wanted me to address their concerns to her and her husband, who I really didn’t know very well and his boss was not there.
While thinking about how I was going to handle this delicate situation, another employee who overheard the conversation, informed me the lady was not pregnant, she just carried a ‘lot of excessive weight up front’(nice way to say she was just fat).
That was years ago and I still think about how bad that could have gone.

Yep. And denial about it only hurts you, you don’t grow and learn from it.

DOn't take your cuffs off in the back of a squad car, even if you can and they are very uncomfortable.

Be careful what you say about others. You never know who is friends with, married to, or related to who

Old fashioned arse whippings as a learning experience are greatly underrated (and missing generally in our society)
Absolutely correct. I’m 53 and one of our service managers is 51. We have both worked for our company for over 20 years. The majority of our other employees on the service side are under 30. We were sitting around one day with about 10 of them and this very subject came up. I asked them how many had ever been punched in the face or punched someone else in the face. Out of the 10 it was one guy. I told my service manager right there in front of them that we needed to add that question to all future interviews and if they answer no then we shouldn’t hire them. Such a soft arse generation.

my granddad told me the cut off switch didnt work, so of course his cheap arse would jerry rig it instead of getting a new one. Some kind of lever that i was supposed to move over and tap the plug with, and cut off the spark flow to the cylinder. Dont remember if i did it wrong or the whole thing was just a sick joke (i was like 9 yrs old), but i definitely remember the feeling of completing that circuit with my body.

Unfortunately, pretty much everything. Especially when it comes to women.
Man, this.
I did not learn anything about women, finances or life in general from my father, except maybe what not to do. But it’s hard when you aren’t taught shite as a kid. My parents were married 62 years before my dad died but it was severely dysfunctional. So many times I realized my impulses or decision-making have been broken.
I’m super envious of men who had fathers who modeled and/or taught their sons how to live life and be successful. It’s not universal. Yes, we can learn, but it doesn’t always come naturally.

-Never accidentally break the neutral in a junction box and then not check to see if there is anything feeding through the connection before trying to reconnect it. My electrician dad watched me do this because he had told me to be careful with stuff like that a hundred times and thought it was time for some experience. From then on I had it figured out.
-sleepy? Yea it's only a few miles to drive home. Sure. Stop and rest anyway. The trees are just as hard two miles from home as they are 1000 miles from home.
-Think you will see all of your friends later and just decide to be lazy one night and back out of plans? Don't be so sure. The last time can always be the actual last time.
-"some assembly required" + universal part = pain in the arse.

Don't use your tongue to test if a 9 volt battery is still good.
