Worked as a line cook, expeditor, prep cook, etc at several restaurants in the 1980’s. I still tell people today that I never worked harder for less money, but if you’re young and single, it can be a lot of fun. It’s also where I learned how to cook almost everything.
I was a busboy to salad prep to asst waiter in HS at a fine dining establishment in NOLA. Free drink at end of night and blunts in the back after work for like $2.30 bucks an hour plus small tip%. Great times and also learned how to cook there which is an skill that has lasted me a lifetime.

The nice thing about working as a cook in my late teens was that I would make food for the bartenders and they would hook me up with whatever liquor I wanted. I was usually buzzing pretty good while running that grill.

Cooking on the line will give your core a workout.

I cooked on the line during college and grad school and I always look fondly back on my time. Fridays and Saturdays were a helluva lot of fun. Even in fine dining, the crew is almost always some hard living folks.

It is a tough dollar for someone in their 40s especially starting at the bottom. Without a good bit of experience, you can make more money waiting tables.

Easy to find work, it's a revolving door. Back of the house might be a culture shock, it's a bunch of folks who love their drugs, hence the constant turnover.

At least when I did it as a 2nd job, I worked in server at high end places so it was slower paced and I'd make a good return on the hours I put in. I'd only work shifts like Thurs-Sat nights and that's where the best money is as a server. A tuesday lunch f'n sucks. Hell, a Tuesday night sucks.

Worked as waiter in a high end place in Atlanta about 25 years ago.Loved it...open for dinner only and kitchen closed at 11:00.

Very easy gig and had the majority of my day to myself to look for a real job and actually saved up a good amount money.I was amazed that so many of the folks who went out and continually blew
their money night after night.

This was 25 years ago and we'd easily bring home $700 to $1,000 a week.

Isn’t cooking simply warming frozen shite and re-frying fried chicken strips and shite like that?

Right?

OP: maybe also look at catering companies. More laid back and less monotonous.

One of the best jobs I ever had was a line cook. Just not a lot of money in it.

It’s a tough way to make a living. Definitely easier ways to make a few bucks in a part time job.

I enjoyed my time in a kitchen. But I was so sick of the general public by then that it was a nice break.

I’d suggest maybe bartending. Money is better and the job is easier (except the hours).

You should read Kitchen Confidential.

Working a kitchen line at a bustling restaurant is actually a great rush.

This is accurate.
