Most people I know who “hate” Baton Rouge fit into one of 4 molds:

They have family here they want to get away from that they feel compelled to visit. A lot of people hate the places they grew up because they have a love/hate relationship with their parents. That is true about literally every town and city on earth.

They’re from New Orleans and used to having everything fun handed to them. I met so many of these in college. They’d bitch about there being nothing to do, but outside of playing video games in their dorm rooms, the only places they’d go was tigerland or the mall of Louisiana. They just assumed because “Baton Rouge sucks” that there must not be anything else to do. They never even tried to explore the city at all.

They’re from out of state and loath everything about Louisiana culture yet live here anyway. A lot of these people seem to be from Atlanta or Chicago. They see everything as sinful, racist, and trashy and just complain about everything. These people are often social justice warriors that assume everyone is out to get them or “silence” them.

People who grew up in the suburbs and only come into the city for LSU games. They have to fight crazy traffic to come here, and since they don’t participate in anything but LSU sports, they get this warped view that the rest of the city is nothing but a crime infested ghetto where black people will shoot you in the face and then get your daughter pregnant.

Not really.

Those cities are much better by and QOL metric. They're always ranked high on "best college town" lists.

Comparing Madison to BR is setting up BR to fail.

Everyone i’ve ever met who went to Ohio state says the same things about Columbus that we say about BR on this board.

Everyone I’ve ever met who went to Georgia has nothing but nice things to say about Athens.

You’re right, and the litter in particular is an indicator of the people themselves and what they think of their own city. That’s got to change. The city’s reluctance to change missing or damaged guard rails for instance along the interstate for almost as long as I’ve been alive is due to them not being pushed by the citizens to do a damn thing. Same can be said for the sludge under the overpasses or weeds taking over the fences. It’s just an overall carelessness and it sends a message to everyone passing through. BR haters couldn’t care less, but for anyone who says they care about this city, THIS should piss you the F off.

A lot more than that actually.

First, due to Exxon, Baton Rouge actually has a lot of people living there from Ohio. Exxon rotates people in from Ohio all the time.

Second, for two years in undergrad I roomed with a guy from Cleveland. His friends from Ohio State wold come down to visit a couple times every year, so I actually know quite a few Buckeye grads.

Naw I started on you when someone gave a decent list of things to do and you replied "That's fricking pathetic".

I get that you and me like different things but the difference is I don't act like a pedantic a-hole.

It really does. It's so easily preventable and isn't even an expensive fix.

It really is bad in most of the city. There are a few neighborhoods with some really nice home architecture, but most of the commercial architecture is ugly and generic post-war suburban sprawl. That's not something unique to BR by any stretch of the imagination (pretty much any place that saw major development between 1950 and 1980 looks exactly the same), but a very valid criticism.

Nice post..... but BR isn't clost to what it was in the 80's.... the crime is out of control in certain areas.... the traffic is unbearable.... if you are going anywhere else north of Florida blvd from downtown to old Hammond highway you are at risk....

These are all facts......

Well of course not. We don't have an 18 year old drinking age anymore. We don't have the biggest rock acts in the world playing the PMAC every other weekend. Judge Parker hadn't destroyed the school system yet. The crack epidemic hadn't taken off yet. We have almost the same road grid with double the number of people in the metro area.

So much went bad for BR in the 80's and 90's. It's just nice to see it somewhat rebounding now.

What's actually good about Baton Rouge...
BR itself?

- Live after 5
- Numerous marathons/10k/5k's
- St. Paddy's day parade
- Southdowns/Spanish town Mardi Gras
- Restaurant Week
- Beer festivals all the time
- etc

...you know the place is horrible when that is the list.

Some of you people are idiots looking for a reason to blast Baton Rouge. It's not like Baton Rouge is a "big city" or anything. What do people expect BR to be? I get it, there are a lot of other places that are better to live, but for many.. the reason it isn't a shithole is because.. It's home.

Yeah there are areas with a lot of crime, but it is unique because LSU is located there. For people who enjoy CFB and want to experience games at certain locations, Tiger Stadium is a top 10 place to experience a football game.

It is the capital city of Louisiana and since each state only has one capital city, that makes it unique. It's location... With the Mississippi River running along it's western border makers it unique.

It has better places to eat than much bigger cities like Houston (although Houston has better real Mexican food).

Overall, there are a lot of good people in Baton Rouge. As much division there might be when it comes to politics, etc, when it comes to situations in which people need help, people in Baton Rouge puts all the bullshite aside and help each other.

Again, there are a lot of better places people can live. It has it's problems, some of them might be worse than it should, but I would not say it is a "shithole"..

There are still certain areas in BR that you can patronize and not fear being mugged, car jacked, or shot. Can’t say the same about other LA cities, so we have that going for us I guess.

I agree entirely. Litter is easily preventable and relatively cheap to clean up.

However, there are so much bigger fish to fry that it's hard to get mad over something like littering.
