I think it's more of a "expected rate of return" argument. We have some huge problems like schools and infrastructure which are extremely expensive to fix where as the relative cost to pick up the trash and cut the grass is pretty minuscule compared to the benefit. You can get a pretty nice little payoff with relatively little effort.

Baton Rouge is not an easy place to live. It has all the problems of a big city, and very few of the amenities

That's a good way of putting it.

Why don't you just name his band rather than just give clues? I'm sure your boy wouldn't mind the word of mouth.

A football game on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium? A great meal at one of Baton Rouge's great restaurants? I can find plenty of fun things to do in the Baton Rouge area. If you prefer you can run down to NO and visit the D-Day Museum? That's if you like looking at the cost of freedom. I love Baton Rouge.

Do it!

Durand Jones & The Indications

The band is based out of Indiana, but Durand grew up in Ascension Parish. Played Jazz Fest last year.

I don't get the need for thread after thread shiteing on BR (or any other town). Given that you live in Nashville or Austin or one of the other annointed towns, it seems like you would have something better to do than start these stupid threads.

These threads are created by people who are second-guessing their own decision to leave. If they were secure about it, they would just quietly go away and enjoy their new town.

Get a dog and do/join the following
Meeting girls:
1. Happy's Running Club (this will help get you in shape)
2. Mango's volleyball
3. Wednesday Yoga at Tin Roof
4. Cane's Dog Park
5. Pint Night at the Bulldog
6. Beer league softball team

If you already know how to play bass, start hitting up blues jams to meet other musicians to join a band. Bassists are always in demand.
Kenny Neal's Juke Joint on Wednesdays
Phil Brady's on Thursdays
Fat Cats on Sundays

Follow the Baton Rouge Musicians and Baton Rouge Live Music etc groups on facebook, and follow Red Stick Music on Twitter so you'll know where everyone is playing and who is looking for band members.

If you want to hear other bands, definitely like the following venues on facebook to know about good local shows where you can meet fellow musicians:
Mid City Ballroom
Atomic Pop Shop
Bottle & Tap
The Varsity Theatre
Spanish Moon
524 Studios
Baton Rouge Music Studio
Red Dragon Listening Room
Bee Nice Concerts
Mid City Rising
Dyson House Listening Room
Harvest Moon Listening Room
The Guru
The Parlour

If you hang out at these places when local bands are playing, you'll run into tons of musicians.

Finally, hit up the festivals. There's tons of them.
Red Stick Roux Rally (next saturday)
Jambalaya Jam
Blues Festival
Fest-For-All
Live After 5
Zapp's Beer Fest
Northgate Fest
etc

What's wrong with what's on the list and what does your city offer? I'll have you mind that I put 'etc' at the bottom. I didn't have time to rattle off every thing that you can do on any given day to enjoy yourself in this city.

ETA: I see kingbob is doing work in this thread. I hold what he says to a very high regard because he calls it both ways. He calls out BR's sore spots and needs, but will defend what it does do well. Always fair and well educated on local matters.

Personally, I've lived in BR for 9 years now all in my young adulthood. If you can't enjoy yourself in this city, you have problems. You just have to find your niche. Does it stack up with other cities I've been to? Hell no. But let's not pretend this place is Alexandria or something.

Exactly. Just think about how many of these similar sized metro areas you would rather live in than BR:
Tulsa, OK
Fresno, CA
Bridgeport, CT
Worcester, MA
Omaha, NE
Albuquerque, NM
Greenville, SC
Bakersfield, CA
Albany, NY
Knoxville, TN
New Haven-Milford, CT
McAllen, TX
El Paso, TX
Allentown, PA
Columbia, SC
Dayton, OH
Greensboro, NC
Little Rock, AR
Stockton, CA
Colorado Springs, CO
Akron, OH
Boise City, ID
Madison, WI
Wichita, KS
Daytona Beach, FL
Des Moines, IA
Springfield, MA
Toledo, OH
Provo, UT
Augusta, GA
Jackson, MS
Harrisburg, PA
Durham-Chapel Hill, NC
Spokane, WA
Scranton, PA
Chattanooga, TN
Youngstown, OH
Modesto, CA
Lancaster, PA
Lafayette, LA

I'm sure there's a few of them, but not many.

It always baffles me when people try to compare BR to Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville etc. Of course those cities have more activities and a bigger job market. And the Chicago Bears could beat Jacksonville State in football too

I woke up to 70 degrees and had to decide if I wanted to make the two mile trek to the Pacific, head downtown for All-Star Weekend, shoot over to Big Bear, drive out to Joshua Tree, take tomorrow off work and head to Vegas, take a ferry out to Catalina, go wine tasting in Ojai, grab a couple pints in the industrial part of downtown, or drive out to Santa Barbara.

Instead I got nostalgic and curled up in a little ball...longing for the BR days of Southdowns, Pluckers, and the Super Matherne's thinking I've made the biggest mistake of my life.

USS Kidd? The Roux House? Maybe see Mike the Tiger hiding in the corner of his "habitat"?

Your home costs 4 times as much as mine.

Your bills are 4 times higher.

Your metro area has 15 times as many people.

It's 70 degrees here too.

This is a thread about how games at this AA baseball park are actually kinda fun. You're saying it sucks compared to Dodger Stadium. No shiite. You pay $80/game, we pay $8. You get what you pay for.

I woke up this morning and debated taking a boat out on the Diversion, going fishing in the Basin, attending a Jazz Brunch in the French Quarter, or driving out to the beach. While it's not La Jolla and Yosemite, it ain't chopped liver either.

BINGO.

Of the 3 people I know that dislike/disliked Baton Rouge.....all were too dull and boring to even try to carve a life out for themselves.

One of them is also a huge sissy that is afraid of encountering a black person. He wouldn't even go to Radio Bar because it was "in a dangerous neighborhood".

Agreed. I traveled to Birmingham a few years back and was very pleasantly surprised at its progress. Downtown is actually sorta nice. Their metro is 30% larger. I wouldn't live there over Baton Rouge, but I could see why others would. It's come a long way.

FYI: Baton Rouge is getting a Top Golf too.

It's pretty comparable to BR. Bad crime, terrible public schools, Detroit level demographics (edge BR), a downtown that's being revitalized, ok restaurant and craft beer scene. It has hills and more developed suburbs. Otherwise the standard of living in pretty much the same as BR. I've spent 2-3 weeks per year in the Ham for the past 15 years because my in laws live there (although they bailed for the burbs 3-4 years ago).
