Complete waste of $ until high school as are elbow guards and shin guards. There is a legit risk of metal spikes stepping on hands in high school combined with jammed fingers. But also remember if they hit a double or a triple they’re not stopping to put on the mitt so they don’t serve a great purpose to me.

100% unnecessary. Same as arm sleeves.

Nobody on my team wore them.

Those extra inches can mean the difference in stealing bases and ultimately getting a ring like you get from a Cracker Jack box on the weekend

With that said our team hits dingers 1-9 so no need to have them

They hardly even slide headfirst until 10U, and they still don't know what hand to put the mitt on even when they start sliding headfirst more regularly. It's mainly a gimmick for younger kids. It does serve a very small purpose as they get older.

Get him one anyway. Let him feel like a dude.

Many pros wear them for good reason. They got sick of missing so much time due to jammed, dislocated or broken fingers.

But kids aren’t sliding in with near the speed, mass, or frequency as the pros do. It probably has more to do with them wanting to mimic the pros.

Travel ball can be a pain to keep up with jones. We were lucky as he didn’t get caught up in that. When he felt his bat went dead, then we would talk about replacing. We did put a cage on his helmet one season after he broke his nose. Hated for him to have that cage but I wasn’t going to let him play that season without. If you think he needs a sliding mitt, do it and don’t worry about it.

Batting gloves I totally understand.

That's all this baw needed:

FYI for those that didn't live in the 70s Pete flew around the bases like superman just lightly touching each base.

We used to just hold our batting gloves in our hands and slide in with our fists. It's not MLB, those 3 inches aren't going to matter.

It isn’t about what i like. Its just kids having fun emulating their fav baseball players just like I did with Oakleys and wristbands to look like the Bash Brothers. Did y’all watch the MLB All Star game? Lots of drip.

We always slid feet first and that’s what I taught my son. The head first dive just seems to be inviting injury in several ways. Plus you don’t get to spike the baseman when you slide in…haha..

To many strawberries feet first for me. Head first my last few years out of self preservation.

Incredibly stupid.

Somehow survived 14 years of baseball without a fricking sliding mitt.

It’s especially dumb to have when the league doesn’t allow head first slides.

It’s mandatory, but only put it in your back pocket. That way the kid looks like he belongs. Scouts pick up on those things.

Sunglasses on your cap, eye black at night and sliding mitt in your back pocket. It’s all a must if you want to get to the show.

How much are you spending on this nonsense already? What’s an extra $85?

You can't slide and grab a handful of dirt to throw in the eyes of the player on the bag with a sliding glove. Play hard or not at all
