What's insane about that? You think someone making 50k each at two separate jobs should be taxed less than someone making 100k at one job? That's retarded.
Also I like how you just ignore how asinine your proposal is. The retardedness of our current system has zero bearing on how braindead your proposal is.

Cancer treatments? Diabetes medication? Heart surgery?

Well we’re talking about the whole thing…. Dipshit

Why are you limiting it to that?
Well I would consider your point irrelevant since most states, medical treatments and services provided by licensed healthcare professionals are exempt from sales tax. This exemption is typically extended to necessary medical services, including cancer treatments, heart treatments, and other critical health services.
However, certain items related to healthcare, such as medical supplies, equipment, and medications, may be subject to sales tax, depending on the state. I don't think necessity items like this should be taxed

Shouldn't have to have an item that's been taxed once already be taxed again. For example, If the national sales tax were already implemented today. I buy a car from a dealership tomorrow, and decide to sell it back to the dealership, then the next person who now buys that used car from the dealership should not have to pay taxes on it, since the tax was already paid by me for that car.
The second sale is a separate transaction. You will need to pay sales tax on the second transaction.
You wanted a consumption tax, so we are giving you a consumption tax.

They all want a million exemptions too.
I guess we'll have to tax normal consumer goods at 40-50% to make up for all the shite that won't be taxed under their proposals.

Yep. At the core, the consumption tax sycophants are LOLbertarians who will want to abolish government and then recreate the same systems in the private sector.
It's all retarded, reactionary thinking without much thought in how things will play out IRL.
In their consumption tax utopia given enough time this tax scheme we become as convoluted and voluminous as the current tax code.

Yep. By carving out a million exemptions, you must increase the rates on the taxable items to make up the short fall to achieve your desired revenue target.

Nothing
If you have to bring your wife to the ER due to preeclampsia, should the hospital let your wife and unborn child die if you don't have the scratch to pay the sales tax?
ETA: Maybe the government will be nice about it and just garnish your wages and put a lien on your house instead.

Once you start carving things out, it becomes useless.

I believe in this fairytale hypothetical that they brought up everything would be taxed, including services. Which, makes the hypothetical irrelevant because it would never happen that way. Which ultimately I think is their point

The question being posed is "what should be exempt". Several posters have said that nothing should be exempt.

The European model exempts very few services. Granted, medical is one, which I’m good with.
But their entire point is they want a tax system that doesn’t pick winners and losers and is simple

I lived in Italy for 6 years and had a record shop there. I collected IVA (value added tax) only on any new merch the shop sold. All used records were tax exempt since they had, theoretically, already been taxed.

Just put in a national flat income tax. But the progs wouldn't want that because they know that the US has one of the most progressive income tax structures in the world, and they still want to be able to wail about the wealthy "paying their fair share".
Never mind that the top 1% of earners paid 40.4% of all federal income taxes in 2022. The top 10% of earners bore responsibility for 76% of all income taxes paid, and the top 25% paid 89% of all income taxes. Altogether, the top 50% of filers earned 90% of all income and were responsible for 98% of all income taxes paid in 2021.

Suppressors. Those should be required and cheap as shite.

What percentage of the national income did the 1% earn?
You conveniently left that out.

You are so simple. The product will be cheaper because of no corporate tax so the consumption tax will be a wash on the final amount owed.
